Hello! The question above might sound silly but I have been wondering what good helmets, boots and gloves do in practical terms. Can they just be classified as useless weight? If they have no practical use in the game, I wonder what made the developers spend time and efforts in making several of them. Thanks for your answers!
the normal ones are just normal. At least they allowed your character to appear different when wearing metal or leather. There are magical boots, gloves, helmets. Go around barefoot, if you want. @Ted, you ninjad me!
Of course for ROLE-PLAYING purposes... Who could justify a character on the frontlines NOT wearing a helm of some sort- and your frontliners have the strenght anyway... suit them up right!
Plus the appearance of the character in the game: My female mages wear celtic tats, a white cloak, and a coolie hat. Charming!
Its a fair point - look how many mods have been done of clothes etc. People like that stuff  I used to have all my party in Pool of Radiance wear the same motif (solid blue with gold highlights) to give them a uniform.
I try to do the opposite- I want everyone to look distinct, not least because sometimes (too often!) I click the wrong opponent and endure many AoO!s. I try to use different hair colors and/ or cloaks. And to cover the Elven Chain shoulders.
How do the Temple robes work? No one seems to care that my group is wearing Fire Temple robes when talking to other temple groups or to prisoners.
IIRC, the creatures labelled as "temple" don't attack you if you're wearing the right robes (e.g. "Fire Temple Bugbear"). If you already accepted a quest from the priest ("friend of ___ temple" reputation) then the robes are quite useless.
