How should Suggestion be handled?

    Unfortunately Jerry, in the Co8 ethos, rules compliance has always trumped making the game far more interesting.

    I do understand your desire to enjoy the game in the way you describe, but such an exploit would typically be the domain of an individual's game modification, ala Wizgeorge. It just so happens that Vanilla ToEE featured this exploit right from the start.

    Sure, depending on the person or who you're defending against. I just don't see turning on your allies is going to be reasonable unless the battle is obviously going against you and you're of a less than loyal disposition to begin with.

    Suggestion should be more of a "You're going to get yourself killed, you should run while you can" or a "These are not the droids you're looking for" than a "You should fight for me" sort of thing.

    Also, another issue is that Suggestion is langauge-dependant, which means if the creature can't understand you, you can't use Suggestion on it. I have no idea how that would be coded, though.

    While a good idea, this is non-compliant with the D&D rules.

    Of course, Charm Person, as implemented, is not compliant with the D&D rules either. Charm is supposed to make the target the caster's friend, but it doesn't remove previous alliances. Of course, the Charm Person and Charm Monster spells have a long history in D&D computer games of working how they do in ToEE, so they have a lot more leeway, IMO.

    Indeed, I recognize they're not official rules. Having played for over 20 years though, I'm less about "official" and more about making something balanced.

    Anyways, just a... suggestion. ;p

    And house rules are fine and dandy, I use plenty of them myself in the games I run. However, what makes ToEE special, in addition to being turn-based, is it's adherence to the rules. It doesn't have funky things like helmets prevent critical hits, like BG or a Parrying skill like NWN. As such, Co8's policy is to try to emulate the PNP rules as closely as possible with any mods.

    What Kalshane said, yah. I was gonna have a new magic potion in my Hickory Branch MOD called "can of whoop ass". I was going to add one potion of it to the mod for cause of good humor and fun.

    Get it? (Don't make me open a can of whoop ass!)

    But alas, it was not meant to be for the reasoning Kalshane mentioned.

    That would be a great addition Krunch, I'd like to see that for a one-shot infusion of humor. The rules are great, but part of the fun of playing is to "wing it" on occasion.

    If we can have a double action revolver, why not a can of whupass? They key is to keep those sort of non-compliant additions as one shots and rarely occuring so that they are clearly exceptions.

    Well, I'll admit that I'm something of an orthodox gamer. I can't stand silly stuff, or anachronisms, however disguised. This is in fact a problem for me, in that so many CRPGs are laced with goofiness or mixed themes which totally ruin the game for me.

    I thought your mod was awesome, especially given the new terrain, and enjoyed it a lot. I am very glad though that there was no "whoop-ass" to find.

    Whoop-ass is in the game already; it's just called Speed. You can implement this by making your item description read that very term, but using a potion you think fits that description if you don't think Speed fills the bill. Growth, Heroism & Giant Strength also come to mind.


    Right; but it could be. It is very dependant on the circumstances, which are almost impossiple to govern with the rigid set of possibilities in a computer game.

    So...going with the Hazelnut/Kalshane model, we have an established set of suggestions:

    Approach
    Drop
    Fall
    Flee
    Halt


    Ignore Us (these aren't the droids...)
    Help Us (you guys should be on our side...)

    Maybe a dual layered effect is possible. Once the target Halts, for example, they can get another Suggestion (during the duration) that says Help Us or Ignore Us, or even Take us to your leader...?

    Would it be possible to have some suggestion options grant a saving throw penalty? Attack that guy over there, while not necessarily a reasonable suggestion, is certainly a legal one. By the rules, the target would get a bonus to his saving throw when given such a suggestion**.

    **This may be a little house-rulish, but wouldn't a suggestion like "hey, you should attack me instead of my companions because I just tried to cast a nasty compulsion spell on you and I smell bad" actually provide a penalty to the enemy's saving throw? Generally speaking, attacking the spellcaster first is considered a good idea.......without a casting of suggestion.

    If someone comes up with a recruit NPC spell I won't mind whatever happens to suggestion, though it seems silly to make it just another differently named version of command.

    Cerulean the Blue made two spells that do just that, they are testing tools however, and not likely to end up in any wizards spellbook any time soon.
