certainly not the most powerful, but in my opinion one of the most used items in my games at least is the Helm of Reading Magic - (might I add that I didn't actually make it).
I think the Staff of Frost is a pretty powerful item, especially useful in the fire node ;)

Stormbringer. Not even legal for d&d. Moorcock will sue.

I am not saying this is correct, but it seems to be the most popular internet 'info' related to the issue of TSR being sued.
If I think Chaosium had the license to use Moorcock's characters, and subsequently gave permission to TRS to use the characters in the 2nd printing of the AD&D 1st edition Deities and Demigods book. About half way through the second printing (oddly the first time they had official permission to use the material), TSR decided it was best not to promote a rival company, and removed the material, along with the Cthulhul mythos.

Stormbringer stats: +5 sword, intel 18(?), ego 20. On hit, 50% chance to drain ALL of the victims levels, otherwise drains only half of them. Wielder of sword gets a boost in str of 1 and boost in hitpoints of 5 for every two levels drained. Wielder also gets AC -6 (would be +16 to Armor in 3.5 edition), and sword can be let lose to perform as a dancing sword.

There were more powers, but these are the main ones. Definitely one of the most powerful items in pnp game.

Um, is that correct? That's instant death half the time, half-dead the other half? Sounds wrong.

That is how Stormbringer works according to the AD&D 1st Edition rules.

@kalshane: How would the Strombringer stats listed in post # 20 of this thread be updated to be compliant to the D&D 3.5 Edition ruleset?

I'd have to think about that one. In 3.x they tried to move away from random chances of death and dismemberment and make things based on saving throws. And my lack of familiarity with Elric et all certainly doesn't help. :)

That is how it worked in the books. Even a slight nick with the blade could allow it to devour your soul. More powerful creatures (i.e. immortals) took more than one hit, but even they were not immune. The sword (and it's twin) were "created" to destroy gods, after all.

Stormbringer & Mournblade are actually demons in the form of swords. They are +5, (Int 18, Ego 20) and 3.5 compliant already, IMO. You only lose half of your life energy if the roll is in your favor once a hit is scored. Otherwise, horrible eternal death awaits.

Here's a treat for ya (click on "Elric image gallery" to the left):

I thought of another one, too: the Tentacle Rods from QotS. The Greater Rod is +6, allows 6 attacks, and is otherwise completely nasss-tay! Better than a Vorpal sword by far...but the latter only needs to hit hard once!
