Charged items have 20 charges in ToEE, which IMHO is quite enough, even though the D&D rules state they should have 50 charges, the brooch may be used by any character who equips it, there is an expanded long_descriptions.mes file in the 5.0.4 CMF which adds a lot of descriptions into the game. There is no way to find out how many charges are left in a charged item, most items with charges simply vanish when they expire (like with wands and the brooch) but others simply stop working (like the staff of striking).

Oh, the brooch is charged too? Darn! But I am right in not being able to see how many charges are left, right?

That is RAW (Rules As Writen) yes. you cannot tell how many charges are left, unless you keep track of the number of charges used yourself. The brooch is a bit of a cheat actually because the RAW state that you get protection from magic missiles (like with the shield spell) but not the shield bonus to AC, but since so few casters use magic missile in ToEE, the brooch would be almost completly useless if it didn't grant an AC bonus.

I see, thank you. I didnt know that RAW meant that, good to know. The +4 shield ac bonus is really huge, btw, I think it is one of the very best low-level spells, I use it and Mage Armor all the time.
    Thats +8 to AC!
What seems odd to me, while we are talking about AC, is that I havent found any heavy armor worth wearing except for Lareth's breastplate so far.
Since my fighter has a +3 to dex bonus, wearing chain seems like the obvious solution, since I only get +2 more AC from heavy armor, but get a -2 dex bonus.
Do most others do this as well?
I should say that I got lucky rolling, this was not with point-buy.

Generally speaking you should equip armour according to your dex bonus, if you have a dex bonus of 1 or less, Full Plate Armour will give you the highest possible AC, but it also weighs the most, so make sure you have a high strength score as well. Similarly a character with +8 Dex bonus will get the highest possible AC from Padded Armour as all heavier armours will limit the amount of dex that will apply to your AC. My Rogues routinely end up wearing +3 padded armour, gloves of dex +3, ring of protection +2, and an elven shield +3 or a +3 darkwood buckler (if I'm dual wielding magical weapons), and have a modified dex score of +8 for a total AC of 32 (or 31 with the buckler and dual weapons) or sometimes a little higher (shield of faith and barkskin buffs can boost AC higher when needed).

A fighter with a +3 dex bonus will probably get the best use out of a suit of Mithral Plate, especially if you can have a caster enhance it to +3. You end up with armor that gives +11 to AC, plus you get your full +3 dex bonus. Add in a good shield (if using a one-handed weapon) and maybe a ring of protection or necklace of natural armor and you can get your AC up over 30 even without boosting your dex or using spells.

If you can get your dex to 18-19, Elven Chain is great (especially purple.) With dex of 20-23, you might want to look at Mithral Chain.

Oh I see thank you -- since I just cleared the moathouse I havent seen such nice stuff yet, but perhaps that is to come. Most helpful, thanks!

Speaking of nice stuff -- I would have hoped there would be a place in Hommlett where one could purchase some weapons; in particular, I am looking for a simple +1 composite longbow, but no one seems to have such stuff. Where does a poor fellow have to go to get a composite bow?

Once you have cleared the spiders from Deklo Grove, you can talk to the woodworking craftsman in Hommlet (forget his name) and he will make masterwork wood weapons, including composite logbows. Sadly, I don't recall ever finding a magic composite longbow, but you will find a magic bow or two as you adventure. Buy the MW comp. bow that best suits your archer (depending on his/her strengh bonus) and craft away as level/experience/money permits.

    Hey, thanks for that tip!

Interestingly enough, however, I did something similar for the Blacksmith; I went to the meadows and did the Rainbow Rock, and there I found a giant. My third level party managed to take him down without any serious losses, although I was lucky.
I brought the Smith the Giant's Head, and he was pleased; the logbook shows that I have completed the quest (green), and the Smith will even show me his "masterwork items" as indicated in the dialoge options.
Yet when I select this option, the barter window opens with the same old crap he had before. I tested some of it by buying some, and it is, in fact, the same old crap.
    What gives?

The blacksmith actually states that it will be a whole 7 days before he would have any masterwork items available, go to the in and rest for a week, and try talking to him again.

Ah, sorry, I could have sworn he said "in the morning".

I killed the spiders in the Grove for the Woodcutter, by the way, and do not see the option to even barter with him, let alone get Masterwork items. (He did mention his sick daughter, however, and for that apparently I need to find a flower.) I know I finished the spider quest because it is green, too, and the Woodcutter was very happy. Still no chance to barter, however. Tant pis?

The woodcutter, and the cabinet maker are 2 completely different NPC's, The cabinet maker is in the next house north of the jeweler.

Brief one here: I noticed that my wizard was just able to learn "fear" as a fourth level spell. It is listed, however, as a second-level spell. Is this a Co8 change-around or did I miss something?

I think that thats how its sposed to be...

Spells Gained at a New Level
Wizards perform a certain amount of spell research between adventures. Each time a character attains a new wizard level, she gains two spells of her choice to add to her spellbook. The two free spells must be of spell levels she can cast. If she has chosen to specialize in a school of magic, one of the two free spells must be from her specialty school
