Yeah thats what I am talking about for KotB: identical lines -

    - Hand over the crown, Kingy, or I'll chop u up (Intimidate <= 12)

    - Hand over the crown, Kingy, or I'll chop u up (Intimidate > 12)

It will look identical in game, but the party will have to decide if they can really get away with saying such a thing. If they are a hi level party with led by a 22 Str Half-Orc carrying a +3 axe with Intimidate of 15 (ie, someone who really could intimidate folks) they might go for it - if they are a 1st lvl party, they might think twice.

I like to think I am not overdoing this (its not like every single check will be like it) but sometimes the playres have to stop and think about what they are doing, and sometimes they will try things but it just won't work.

We could make it worse - we could painfully script actual d20 checks for every one, then listen to the screams as people screw up a major plot moment by attempting Diplomacy then rolling a 1.

Oh, KOTB is going to be sooo good. Proper variations on whether a social skill works or not.....

Now you are just tantalising us cruelly whilst we wait-its worse than waiting for Santa!

Of course it's worse than waiting for Santa. Didn't you know?? Ted is Santa's evil twin brother. ;)

I'm just saying it seems odd that the players that try to talk to the creatures are the ones who get a harder encounter rather than the ones who try to cheat the system by starting combat from a distance.

I've apparently been doing it wrong, then. :)

I'm all for this. Characters that try social gambits (particularly those that are out of their league) and fail should pay the price for it. I just don't think exploiting the system is the way to go about it.

I realize you're not nailing them with anything super-deadly, but you're still going to tick people off. There's already people that gripe about the dialogue-buffs in the Broken Tower and Target of Revenge battles, and those buffs have legitimate in-game reasons for working.

That said, I do think making the social skills not be automatic is a really cool idea and I look forward to seeing it in action.
