Yeah... back away. They should be yelling something like "back off!", don't engage with them and if necessary beat them down with non-lethal. We tried very hard to avoid that but it is meant to be hard, inasmuch as you have to get in there quick and rescue them which means they will be in the fight. The script is desgined to pull them out of the fight if you back off, but it may have issues I don't dispute. We did our best.
