Yes so if anyone has a nulb crash in the future the best advise is to reinstall the mod via control panel add and remove and re-download the mod and mod patch because somtimes the link can be ok on your cpu for a wile but files do get corrupted over time so a fresh download is advised! thank you final note on the Nulb crash Thread.

    Nulb Crash

Ever since I saved on my brothers game (this might have nothing to do with this) when I try to get to Nulb the game crashes, and I have tried to get to Nulb repeatedly 6 times! Please help. I have done everything besides things that have anything to do with nulb, the temple, and verbobonc because I killed Lareth at the moathouse. :help:

    Re: Nulb Crash

    Hi Norsanar,

This is a known issue. Please see this sticky thread for details:

    http://www.co8.org/forum/showthread.php?t=5170

If you have an older save, try going back to it and then re-installing the CMF patch according to step 6 of these instructions, precisely, and then give it another go. Good luck.

EDIT: Have managed to get the game working, see my explanation below:

I know this has already been said, but I wish to give yo umy version... I have been playing v5.0.0 for about 6 months with no major problems, but yesterday I installed the 5.0.5 patch, deleted all my saves, set the FE to clear the game cache and then and ran a new game.... I'm now getting the nulb crash bug... Not too keen on a full reinstall since the above posts generally suggest that that doesn't really work.... Please PM me if there is a WORKING solution to this problem avaliable?

Right... after fiddling around with creating a failed dual install of V5.0.0 and v5.0.5, this is how I managed to get the game working.

From the looks of it, extracting the files directly from winRAR into the Temple directory is a big no no. All this does is create a data conflict, whereby the game still uses the old 5.o.o data... My justification for saying this is that the NPC's on the shop map were using the old settings and portraits after I thought I'd updated the game, whereas using my new method they have changed to new versions...

What I did was simply uninstall CO8 v.5 using add/remove programs, then reinstalled from my old v.5 .exe that I downloaded months ago.... I activated the game in the front end, before extracting the RAR archive INTO A SEPARATE FOLDER..... Take note of the SEPARATE folder bit... don't extract the files directly into the TOEE root directory as instructed in the install instructions... trust me!

Now, go into your new folder and simply copy and paste the folders into your TOEE root directory, and then clear map cache before starting a new game.... The way you Can tell that this has worked is that the NEW front end will work, rather than the 3.8 version I had after installing the game as per the instructions.... Secondly, on the shop map the traders will be a little different, and items will now have their 'shift-click' option, just like in the KOTB demo.

No offense, but it seems your installation instructions caused this problem..... The direct extract from winRAR requires a setting to automatically overwrite files, which not everyone has set (from memory, I think mien is disabled)..... which is why nulb crashes as there is a conflict between the 5.0.0 and 5.0.5 data files.

I hope this helps some people.... If you have any questions, please PM me and I'll try and make my explanation a little clearer.

Oh, and yes I rebooted my save from v.5.05 before the nulb crash, and attempted to travel to nulb and it worked perfectly fine!

    Happy adventuring!

Of course... maybe this was just in my case... However, I hope that my method works for everyone else :)

    Feedback, guys?

Thanks for all that info and research, Badger-ude. :)

Because of it, I just tried a totally fresh installation of the Co8 v5 module from scratch, including CMF 5.0.5, build 06.08.2008. When it came time to extract the contents of the CMF with WinRAR, I was presented with a screen (see image below) with options for 'Update mode' and 'Overwrite mode.' These were set to 'Extract and replace files' and 'Ask before overwrite' respectively. Being as this is also a virgin installation of WinRAR itself, I have to assume that these are the default settings. I can see, however, how selecting 'Skip existing files' for the 'Overwrite mode' setting would cause the problems you describe. This would seem to require that a person actually take the step of enabling that setting though, whereas 'Ask before overwrite' appears to be the default.

Given this, I can't conclude that our installation instructions are in error. Perhaps we could add a caution to the effect that overwriting is necessary for proper installation of the modpack, but some things have to be considered elementary. My question would be why would anyone think that overwriting was not required for a software patch? Replacing files is the very nature of the concept of a patch (in addition to adding files).

If we attempted to account for every possibility of action or condition that users might entertain, our installation instructions would have to be pages long, filled with cautions such as "be sure to turn on your computer before proceeding" and the like. I think we'd all have to agree that that's unrealistic; at some point the user has to be left to his own devices. There is no other way, particularly for an outfit like us that can't staff a tech support hotline or write manuals or do things of that nature.

Nonetheless, thanks again for the information. This may go a long way toward explaining what's behind the Nulb crashes, and we'll be able to advise people accordingly.

Incidentally, what do you mean by "old settings and portraits" on the shopmap? None of the portraits have changed there as of yet - you should see and have seen the Darley portrait for Jade Empress all along, for example.

Hmm well the portraits are definatly different.... well, at least different enough to notice. Honestly, i can't remember what they were liek before, but when I installed yesterday I notced they had changed...

On the topic of the winrar settings: My settings are set to update and replace files automatically aswell, but from the sound of it, using this method caused problems for people posting before me, whereas my method seemed to work for me.... It could be a one off, but it would be interesting to see if someone else manages to fix their problem following my method....

Thanks for taking the time to investigate my findings though :)

I'm off to hunt some orc ;-)

Just my 2 cents here... I had this problem for the last week or so and I REFUSED to start again - turns out if you read everything 20 times the problem goes away (well, if you follow instructions).

My existing save games now work with nulb, all I did was un install 5.0.0, then exactly follow the instructions on the main page (yeah yeah, go and read them again, I bet you did it wrong) now it ALL WORKS.

    Thanks guys, you rock.

It would seem that the Nulb crashes are down to one cause - fubar installation

Easily done though as most of us know ;)

So my Nulb crashes were caused by erroneous instalation of the Mods them?

Does this mean that I have to redo it all? Before I just extracted the files on default mode, but now I should do it on 'Extract and replace files', right?

I could have sworn I did that before.

Or is there a simpler way to fix it all? Forgive the ignorant questions, but I have the computer skills of a damp brick.

Ooh, a DAMP brick! I bow before Your Mightiness.

Be sure to check "Clean Game Cache on Start Up" on the Front End before you start the game after installing the CMF or any mod. This gets rid of the maps, etc. created when you created the data file when you started the FE the first time, before you applied the CMF.

    In short:

    Check "Clean Game..."
    Restart Game

I mention this because it gets pretty wierd otherwise (better than LSD). If you've done this already, ignore this post.

There probably is a simpler way to fix it, but without knowing exactly (and I do mean exactly) what you've installed and in which order and where you put it, then I'm afraid the simplest solution is to nuke the install totally and then start again.

I spent many many hours trying to get Nulb to crash, and the only way in which I could do it was by messing the installation procedure up.

Believe me when I say that I don't recommend re-installs lightly. I reckon I must be the person on the boards who has played the reinstall game the most in hunting for user-specific bugs. It isn't fun, and it's tedious. But sometimes it's an awful lot quicker than taking someone through step-by-step via the boards.

Will revamp the instructions for installation soon to try and further minimise any potential confusion or problems with installing the game.

In fact, might do it tonight as I need to make a fresh install anyways.
