I got LotR and warhammer figurines. I been looking for something that would make a good human barbarian w/greatsword but no luck yet.
Yes, they're majorly the same scale, but the details make the difference:LotR are more realistic and proportionated (really i don't like them) and that makes them more difficult to paint (since the head are to small, the faces are not too detailed), D&D are are perfect match for the LotR are almost the same size and proportions but don't like them neither (in fact are poorly detailed) and mostly of them are already painted (awfully), i think the best option are the warhammer, are fully deep detailed, the proportions are a bit exaggerated but to better results and have a HUGE selection...of course the monsters tipically from D&D are no available...but dude, you belong to a modders guild, so put your hands (and eye eagles:aaaa: )to work! you will find more fun in the "modding" of miniatures than playing with them...like these two: they where the same model...before a "cut/paste"
the problem with that is that the shiping is more expencive than the actual mini most of the time, I'd rather just find one I want in a store here and no hurry eh.
I like the Games Workshop's Warhammer and LotR models, I have far more of the LotR models than the Warhammer ones, but the models are slightly larger than the Ral Partha models I've bought from other shops, they are also quite expensive in comparison. For most fantasy creature types, (orcs, goblins, elves, Dwarves etc...) the Games workshop usually have good and cheep plastic models available so you can build up a supply of models that the PC's would most likely encounter quickly (I use the LotR "Moria Goblins" and "Orcs") the level of detail is inferior to the metal ones, but they still look good when painted, but a good PC or reoccuring NPC needs to have a good quality metal miniature, most of my PC mini's are Ral Partha models, but there are other companies that make miniatures, and the Games Workshop may have a Warhammer or LotR character that would fit the bill as well. A shortlist of manufacturers can be found here.
All 3 of those (Warhammer, D&D, LotR) are very high quality (moreso than, say, Citadel miniatures, with all due respect) but I would have thought the D&D ones were noticeably smaller than the Warhammer ones?
Yes they are, but then some people just are taller than others, for elves humans orcs and dwarves you can pretty much get away with mixing and matching the two, but halflings and gnomes are significantly different, Games Workshop (Citadel) Halflings look like small beardless dwarves, Ral Partha Halflings look more like tubby children.
Too much time on my hands (well, on Sundays anyway. Other days I mod ) http://www.irregularwebcomic.net/5.html
Our first figurines. Mine's the dwarf with the flag, the drow's my brother's and the elf is by my other brother. I know mine sucks, but it's the first time I ever made something with a brush and managed to make it resemble the thing I tried to paint. Oh, we still have to do the holders and paint them with varnish.
Use a matt paint? Or don't varnish that bit, if you were using a final coat thing? The Elves are really quite good, just copy your brothers and think about the whole matt vs gloss thing when choosing paints. We've all been there, I didn't buy a matt black for years: anything black was done with a gloss, and my early efforts had some VERY funky colourschemes
Hmmm I guess I should've mixed it with "skull white" for matting... Heh, my bro's are better at painting than me as you can see.... and I totally screwed up the flag, argh! And thanks for the tip.
