    Do you remember seeing a cut scene about the golden skull? If you didn't it's probably still in the chest, you did find both chests, (one locked and trapped and one unlocked and hidden).

    Well, even if he sold the skull, it still would have opened the necessary door the instant he picked it up. It sounds to me that he didn't take everything in the chest.
