Usually, talking to a non intelligent creature, you'll get a "ugh", or the more expressive "er?" I had Meleny wildshaped in to bear (highlighted in blue)...so she talks to a summoned brown bear...and guess what, they're pretty smart... Who says that "speak with animals" doesn't work?
