Pathfinder arcane archers gain 7 levels of caster level over the course of the 10 levels of the class; by contrast, D&D ones don't by the SRD. I know that by SRD rules-as-written, Imbue Arrow only allows you to use area of effect spells, but I'd be inclined to allow touch spells to be delivered also- in ToEE there's minimal benefit to inreasing the range of things like fireball and stinking cloud to longbow range- certainly not enough to take martial levels and eschew spellcaster progression for. Being able to deliver Shocking Grasp or Ghoul Touch by arrow would be cool and unique; extra range on a Fireball not so much. For AoE spells, I'd rule that the target hit by the arrow doesn't get a reflex save to avoid effects-if the arrow beats your AC it is sticking in you when the spell goes off.
A major point of Eldritch Knight over Fighter/Wiz is that you get full BAB, d6 HD, and a good Fortitude save instead of a Wizard's d4, 1/2 BAB, and good Will save. You're doing it for the bonus feat kicker at level 1 or/and the aforementioned benefits. Because having full BAB on a 'Wizard' can be devastating! If you believe you aren't getting enough feats with EK, what are you trying to do? It seems like you're trying to do too much.
I think what I was looking for was half ( or a quarter ) of the new spells granted to a wizard and half ( or a quarter ) of the feats granted to a fighter. Some would think that too much. I'm indecisive on the matter.
A Human Wizard5/Fighter1/Eldritch KnightX already has at least 2 Fighter bonus feats. What do you really need beyond Improved Initiative, Combat Reflexes, Power Attack, Cleave, and Great Cleave? Also, there are no feat equivalents to many spells. You could compare Whirlwind Attack and wail of the banshee, but there's no greater heroism substitution, nor one for teleport, summon spells, haste, and, indeed, most ToEE spells.
Dodge, mobility, improved critical, Weapon focus and weapon specialization. Or point blank, precise shot and sharp shooter if you're ranged. I will concede that an Eldritch knight can learn spells from scribing scrolls. My fighter/wizard (longbow specialist) is turning out well with equal levels. She's a positive addition to the party. I also have to admit that I am somewhat of a feat monger.
Greater Magic Weapon could replace the need for weapon focus/specialization, Keen Edge can do the improved critical bit, dodge os weaker than mage armor and shield for AC buffing, Cats Grace and reduce person will improve your ranged attacks chances to hit, plus casters have the option to craft items that do those effects for you so you don't have to memorize the spells.
I think that I see where you are going. We're using magic to supplement the character instead of feats. Not entirely ideal but nearly as good and perhaps more in character? It is making EK sound more appealing if not exactly what I was looking for.
Trouble is, there has to be a trade off somewhere, you can't have a single class fighter mage mix that gets full benefits of both classes, that doesn't cost double xp to level up - not even in 2nd ed where fighter mage was a thing (each class accrued it's half of all xp the character has gained, and each class would level up when that classes xp reached the number required for the next level).
Something else came to mind ;perhaps Eldritch Knight would be a good solo character. Perhaps even good enough for a new thread...
Perhaps, spell selection for later levels will be limited to only those that have scrolls available to purchase or pick up as loot, and some of the new higher level spells don't yet have scrolls at all.
I understand that many scrolls can be purchased at Verbobonc. If you have another wizard in your party then you can do the scribe/copy sharing thing.
Yes to both points, but there are some newer spells that have yet to have scrolls associated with them, and the scrolls themselves made craftable.
