A question for those more kowledgeable.

Why when my thief successfully sneaks and disarms a trap in someone's shop, opens the chest, etc. does a fight always ensue? This only happens when I take the items from the chest.

Is it a game engine question and thus out of the modders control? Or is it settings on the chest? To me one of the paramount uses of a thief is to sneak into someone's abode and steal 'em blind and then run like the wind.

All merchants, who were vulnerable to a 1st level thief, were driven out of Hommlet business long time ago, I think.

This makes sense, does not it?

(Anyway, let us wait for Circle's answer.)

I had to giggle at that one. But how about merchants vulnerable to a 5th level thief?

Well, you are stealing their stuff. And they are often in plain sight. If you are at the jeweler's, I imagine he has a higher DR alarm.

Nope, that is not it. If you break into the chest a fight always ensues. If you check the DR rolls it tells the story.

I've allways assumed that the game stops you sneaking when you open the chest; therefore they see you steal it.

It wouldn't actually be called stealing if you just killed them first. If they're dead then they don't own anything anymore.

Well, there's burning in CE opening and in the Fire Node. There's raping in the Fire Node as well, if you go there at party level 6. ;)

Evil parties should have the option to rape, pillage and burn the innocent Hommletians.
