VERY silly question, y'all, but how do I know which one of the 14,239,095 ToEE files is THE root file? Y'know, so I can unzip the 4.0.1 patch to the right place?
if using toffee make sure that Co8 is the selected module. you'll have to unzip to a different location and then just cut or copy both the data folder and the modules folders into your temple of elemental evil folder. [EDIT] that'll work for non-toffee as well I think
Root=base 'branch' of the directory 'tree' in comp-speak. It's the main one, if you will, of whatever program your looking at...in this case, toee. It's the bold part of this statement: c:\program_files\atari\toee Mine's a little different, 'cause I made it go straight off the drive in its own folder. Yours may be, too, if you did it that way on purpose. Some folks like it different.
OK, Cujo and Spike, I am bit of a 4 yrs old when it comes to this stuff. I don't understand fully somethings: 1. What do you mean "if using toffee make sure that Co8 is the selected module"? I am using ToEEFE, but what do you mean the selected module? I think you mean in the ToEFFE area where you pick things like "show NPC hit points" and "windowed mode" that I need to have the Co8 thing selected instead of the Temple of Elemental Evil thing selected, right?-- But do I have to be PLAYING the game in windowed mode? I don't THINK so, but again, I am new at this stuff... 2. "Unzip to a different location"-- um how? where? I have a folder on my desktop named "unused desktop items" would that location work? 3. "just cut or copy both the data folder and the modules folders into your temple of elemental evil folder" -just dragging the icon copies right? But where exactly to I drag them to? I have a folder with a zipper on it called temple_of_elemental_evil on my desktop, is that where I drag them? and just let them go there and they will find the right place to settle? Or do I have to seek out the Circle_of_Eight_Mod_4.0.0 thingy? OK next- When I did try to unzip 4.0.1 it lets me browse (which I am a little familiar with at least) but what exactly to browse for? Is "c:\program_files\atari\toee" the name of the directory that would be in MY computer if I am using ToEEFE, Spike? You said yours was different but didn't specify if the example you were giving was the right one to look for if I had ToEEFE or if it was an example of yours. And IF I browse and get the right directory to unzip to- that means I don't unzip per Cujo's instructions, right? And again will the unzipped new patch just flow to the right place, then everything will be hunky-dory when I start the game next time, or is there more to do? Thanks again guys.
Also, if "c:\program_files\atari\toee" is NOT the right directory to unzip to for me-- what is, and where would I find it? Aren't you guys just gonna LOVE me when I start trying to "help" y'all Mod? :twitch:
Regarding directories & such... That's how it should look on your computer. You can tell the thing to unzip directly into that that location if that is what it looks like. It's also called the "path", cause you are giving it a direction to follow. I made mine just sort of cut out the middle stages of this. I would not choose to put anything into a location like 'unused files'. When downloading, I make a new folder for it, then direct it into that. You can put this folder anywhere. -on your desktop -on your hard drive -etc. Example: right click on the desk top; select new folder form the menu; name it something relevant; do your download into that folder. -or- Left click start; left click My Computer; double left click drive c: - THEN right click in the window which has opened; select new folder; name it something relevant; do your download into that folder. I did this for my install of ToEE; created a folder on the hard drive & installed to there. I put my downloaded zip files into that, and unzip them there. All windows really is...is a way to organize your filing system. You open a file - it's a window. Here's another example of a path that I'm sure you've got... c:\windows\temp And you can create whatever you want as well: c:\maalri\NC\pics This would be an example of a place you'd store pictures of your home state. Adding in some picture files would look like this: c:\maalri\nc\pics\charlotte.jpg c:\maalri\nc\pics\raleigh.jpg This is one folder named maalri with a folder in it named nc with a folder in that named pics with 2 files inside; one named charlotte & one named raleigh. As you get more pictures in your collection, you put them into the pics file. As you add more pictures form other states, you might go like this: c:\maalri\sc\pics Now the maalri folder has two folders in it, nc & sc...each with its own pics folder inside. Time to add more files: c:\maalri\sc\pics\charleston.jpg c:\maalri\sc\pics\columbia.jpg One way to find paths is to look in the address bar at/near the top of the window. They show up in there as you navigate. I hope this has been helpful.
It has Spike, thanks! :notworthy So, having already downloaded the 4.0.1 patch onto my desktop, I go to unzip it, and when it says to what directory I erase the path there and insert c:\program_files\atari\toee correct? Now, does that automatically fix everything up-- i.e. elmo is no longer drunk, familiars can be controlled better, etc? Or is there more to do? Will these mods show up as options on the ToEEFE opening board? To click on and off as desired, or will they be permanent fixes, or will they be more like DH where you have to go back to Co8.4.0.0 and reinstall with them to make them active? Also, will they affect already in progress games saved, like my 4th run I just started, or will I have to Start a new game to see them work correctly? Thanks again.
1. Send it to where your game is installed; Yes. 2. That should do it I think; Doesn't 4.0.1 require that 4.0 be done first? Yes, if you've done it & the previous is true. 3. I'm not sure. Some may while others are just fixed, I think. 4. Don't know at all, really. I mostly recall people having to start over for new things to take effect, though. Good Luck!
No, that won't do it. It is not set up to just unzip and play. Unfortunately. This one is: Co8-4.0.1_unzip_and_play_patch.zip To use, load Co8 4.0.0 with Front End (that means Co8 4.0.0 should be the last module you have started with Front End), then unzip this patch to your ToEE root directory (the default location is C:\Program Files\Atari\Temple of Elemental Evil). These are permanent fixes to 4.0.0. They become a part of 4.0.0. It is not a seperate mod to be launched from Front End. Most of the fixes in the patch should not require you to start a new game, though the sober Elmo fix might if you already have Elmo in your party (or maybe you can just kick him out and have him rejoin - I'm not sure). Then again, I might be wrong.
correct -- no you don't have to that's a good a place as any dragging moves, if you right click on the folder(s) and then drag you can choose to either move or copy. ... mine is at c:\program_files\atari\temple of elemental evil all you have to do is to get the to folders (data and modules) out of the zip into that directory and you're done. I forgot that on some computers you can just double click on a zip to look at its contents, if you're like that then just copy or move from a double click into the ToEE directory (probably the same as mine). oh and say yes when it bitches are you.
Well, with Allyx's private help, I finally manged to get the right folder to put the unzipped 4.0.1 plug-n-play into!! Elmo sobers up! Woo-HOO! Thanks to EVERYONE who helped. :notworthy
