I would recommend packaging an entire chess set and putting it up on ebay. I can think of one person who would bid on it.
Thank you for this, I was rather toying with the idea of doing something on e-bay. It seems I might just try my luck. . I already promised to deliver this set elsewhere, however, but since I started with the sets, I might as well continue once this one is finished, and show the progress here, if people don't mind. . There is already a spare king, (the one that was too large) and I was thinking of using him in a rather larger version of the set (it's easier to put some more detail on larger minis). I am really honoured by the bidder.
These pictures are huge! Why does the forum not resize them automatically? This is kind of annoying. The good thing is that I can see the details of your miniature better and I have to say that I think it's really impressing! I like the shading and the coloring you did! The pot of flowers look so realistic... They look like if you can pick them up and send flowers on line to your friends. You did a great job!
"iron" side bishops here: A solo view of one of the bishops, showing the "scorpion shield" (I forgot to add pincers for the scorpion, though). Side views and front of the tower: and one of the Knights: (I had to step up the brightness here, though).
Niiice. I think, just for myself, I would be tempted to use the elephants as knights instead of rooks. Great stuff!
Thanks, interesting idea to use the elephants as cavalry. In fact, for the next set I am thinking of making towers with catapults to use as rooks (I mistakenly referred to them as "towers" in the previous posts, thanks for correcting that), but apart from using actual cavalry I had not thought of elephants. Perhaps pre-hellenistic elephants, without towers and scale mail would work as such, but the set would lose the rather powerful (in my view) image of the horse standing on its hind legs, ready to attack (I could not get enough of such poses when I was buying my minis, in fact I had modified one or two cavalry minis to assume that position in the 1/72 scale)... but still, interesting concept. A rather more "bulky" version of the knight.. PS that rook looks bad on the photo, I think, I don't know if its the light or something, but he looks all messed up. the scorpion bishop seems to have come out ok, but I might have to work on another photo on that guy... strange, some minis are not too good on the camera.
And here is a better photo of the previous elephant, it appears that the photograph should be taken from the angle from which the object is lighted: And a couple of images of the new elephant: scorpion instead of an elephant as its "side shield" a different type of armor (more like padded) and armor for the trunk (which is raised, to give the elephant a rather angry look) (actually, the armor for the trunk was placed because the elephant had fallen off the table during the sculpting, and because the clay was still soft it just broke off. I had been meaning to add armor for the trunk anyway, but now I had to make it to strengthen the trunk and to avoid aesthetic problems). About the blueish blurs, it seems to be part of the varnish (each one gets 3 or more hands of varnish), it's not as visible to the eye as it is in the photos, though. About the "golden" parts, I really don't know, as no golden color was included, perhaps the glue reacts with the varnish somehow.
And here is the complete set on the excellent board made by my uncle I reworked on the pawns (actually I remade the bronze ones, because they were too small and the squares were 4 cm) I just noticed that I wrongly placed them on the board, though . There should be a white square on the low right square, but I am sure you get the picture. .
Hello again, just some early stages of a gryphon (planning to do a gryphon rider for a friend) More coming up as work progresses.
An update on something other than the gryphon, a small (somewhat less than 7 cm) tower with a catapult on it (the catapult is not so easily discernable): and a "top" view (still somewhat blurry, though):
And here is an update on the gryphon, the wings have been done (not properly attached yet, of course) as well as the hind lengs. The feathers of the neck are pretty much done, now what's left is to do the skin of the torso and all the legs, as well as finish up on the neck/head feathers. In the end, the torso should look proportionatelly thick to the neck. And, of course the tail.
