Update: Just FYI, it looks like there is a limit of 112 displayable PC portraits in ToEE. This limit is not defined by portraits.mes, but instead by the degree to which the portrait screen can be scrolled (a .dll tweak by Spellslinger that allowed us to display more than 42 portraits in the first place). There are 16 displayable rows of seven portraits. So, this means that the portrait packs will be exclusive. i.e., since we can't add the IWD portraits (83 of them) to the vanilla portraits (36 of them) without going over the displayable limit, we'll have IWD portraits only in the IWD pack. Likewise, Royo will probably have damn near 112 portraits of its own anyway. BG, with 48 portraits, could be added to vanilla's 36 without exceeding the limit, but I'm thinking that for consistency's sake we'll structure it like the other packs. IWD, BG, and Royo are all coming along well btw and should be released soon.
Aye, that it did. However a good meal and a shared bottle of wine with J, soon erased any feelings of self loathing I might have entertained.
Awesome! I was just getting ready to post a request for someone to create a webpage or pdf with all the portraits. Are the IWD faces that fuzzy in-game?
Well the images above are twice the size of the in-game display, so they will likely appear more 'crisp' in-game. But they were drawn that way too, and unlike the BGs (or at least much less so) you have to pan and scan to isolate the faces. I suppose I could attempt to sharpen them, but I really didn't want to alter the originals.
Interesting ... it seems the displayable portraits are not limited to 112. Rather, the scrolling scales. There are always four empty rows below whatever is displayed (or at least the right-most portrait box of the four bottom rows will be empty, thus you could have three empty rows and only the right-most box of the fourth row empty, if that makes any sense). This was probably a fail-safe measure implemented by Spellsinger. Clever fellow. The 'natural' limit as dictated by portraits.mes is then 350 portraits, as there are technically 50 slots available for each of the seven races.
Well, then- I vote for a pack with 350 Pics! I would certainly not like to have to Choose one set of pics or the other, exclusively... Or at least, if it must be a choice (I like the BG ones best) can we have all the Original Portraits in WITH each pack. So the Originals AND BG are in one pack and Originals AND Royo in another pack then -for instance?
That's the plan right now, yes. It turns out that you biff the pregen characters if you replace the vanilla portraits or even rearrange them, so vanilla at least will have to stay. Might as well keep the Co8 stuff too. The add-on stuff will have to be sort of mixed in though - one line of vanilla, one line of BG/whatever and so on. Nothing will have to be left out, and you might actually find that at ToEE resolutions the BGs don't look so hot and the IWDs look better.
I gotta say I'm surprised by the IWD portraits, they share that gritty quality ToEE's portraits exhibit. Were they done by the same artist?
I love the IWD portraits. Always have. It's that sort of Romanticist/pre-Raphelite look, I think that really does it. In fact, I'm using them for about half of my TOEE characters right now. I'll be very excited to see them officially in the next Co8 release!
No. ToEE's artist was Chris Glenn, while IWD's was Jason Manley and IWD2's was Justin Sweet. Ironically, according to teh interweb, Jason Manley was briefly onboard with Troika before they went under. They won't actually be in the next release; they'll just be available as a separate add-on.
Dragonlance Portraits I made some portraits for Dragonlance heroes. They come with portraits.mes file, but you can always add them manually. Big portraits. Small portraits. And here's also 3E stats for all of them. Stats are taken from DL PHP (War of the Lance) and adjusted for level 1. I only selected the feats that are in ToEE.
