So, I noticed that various 'X Person' spells have an additional check for whether the target is large, rather than just humanoid. This means that, for instance, Reduce Person can't be used to dispel Enlarge Person cast on a medium character, and Enlarge Person makes medium characters immune to Hold Person. The easiest way to fix this aspect would be to just remove the check, but I was curious if anyone knows why this check exists. Is there some NPC specified as humanoid that shouldn't be, but it's large size (like Cuthbert maybe, not that it's a threat to him)?
Whenever I saw that line I'd assumed it had a good reason being there. But it looks like the only reason is that it's a 3.0 holdover https://www.enworld.org/threads/3-0-vs-3-5-list-of-changes.116105/ http://opengamingfoundation.org/srd.html That's often the case when something is blatantly wrong with spells. It's really amazing how 18 years after the game's launch people are still finding these "obvious" bugs!
Ah hah. That makes sense. I guess in 3.0 it wouldn't have been an issue, either, because it seems like Enlarge/Reduce does not actually change your size category (it doesn't specify that it does, at least).
