The Brooch of Shielding is overpowered. It should not give an AC bonus

@Basil, as near as I can tell, the Brooch of Shielding just allows the user to cast Shield, as per the spell.

    [edit]

Changed Robes of Midnight to +2 deflection, +2 to intimidate, +2 to hide, +2 to move silently, and the invisibility property. How much should such a thing cost?

    [edit 2]

Changed Helm of Midnight to +2 to spot and listen (was +3). How much should it cost?

    [edit 3]

Celtic Tattoos - removed natural armor property, changed bonuses to +2 to intimidate (was +4) and -2 to diplomacy (was -6). Eliminated use magic device (???) property. Changed price to 50 gp. Changed name to 'Arcane Tattos' per suggestions in this thread.

    [edit 4]

Magic Celtic Tattoos - Changed natural armor to +2, intimidate to +2, diplomacy to -2, removed hide, move silently, and pickpocket penalties, removed use magic device and masterwork properties. Changed price to 8000 gp. Changed name to 'Mystical Tattos' per suggestions in this thread.

    [edit 5]

Changed Marauder Armor to +2 AC bonus (was +3). Masterwork version changed to +2 AC and removed intimidate bonus. They currently cost 200 and 1350 gp respectively.

    [edit 6]

Gladiator Armor - Changed AC bonus to +2 (was +4), masterwork version removed intimidate bonus. They currently cost 100 and 1350 gp respectively.

    [edit 7]

Couldn't find that the corest had a boobies bonus, but changed the price from 1 cp to 10 gp.

    [edit 8]

Oh, and the silver and masterwork nodachis are gone from Ah Fong's shop unless/until someone can give me a specific rundown of what their balanced properties should be. Specific, not "maybe they should be reduced in power?"

The silver nodachi should definitely not appear in the game: if someone wants to console it thats their business, but it should not be available for sale.

However, if a 'masterwork nodachi' is simply a normal masterwork nodachi with no other bonuses, it should be there for 300+gp.

I can't seem to find a regular old nodachi. Should there be masterwork nodachis without regulars?

Ahhh... this is something along the line of "I can't find regular katanas". Throw one in by all means :)

in the oriental hand book, katana* and nodachi only come in masterwork, basically acknowledging the skill required to make them.

*IIRC in every supliment I read katana only come in masterwork, I spose a "rusty katana" would be the non-masterwork version.

Then what would the rusty version be? :scratchhe A scimitar, perhaps, worn down by sharpening until only a sliver of steel is left. Then allowed to rust.

As I recall, it is the black dress that gives the boobie-bonus, not the corset.

Gaear, Allyx and I discussed this some time ago. The Brooch of Shielding RAW merely absorbs a fixed amount of points of magic missile damage. So by all means, let the duration last for hours if it cannot be continually on. But there should never be any AC bonus.

Allyx had suggested applying a -4AC penalty to the shield effect.

Perhaps the current incarnation was the best compromise but then the item is way too cheap.

@Kneller - Thanks, boobs bonus dropped to +2 on the black dress and price adjusted to 50 gp.

@Basil - There don't seem to be wands of shield in the SRD, but a scroll of shield costs 25 gp. Multiply by the number of charges in our brooch (20) and we get 500 gp. Our brooch currently costs 1500 gp. How/why is that too cheap?

Gaear, the issue is that Shield is a personal spell. The Brooch grants the full powers of Shield to a character who could never receive that effect (w/o a wand and ranks in UMD).

Or, how about this argument: In ToEE characters can pay the same amount 1.500gp for an item with unlimited charges AND grants +4 shield bonus, which the original item did not.

Okay Basil, I get the personal effect for non-spellcasters part, thanks. But what are you talking about with the unlimited charges and +4 shield bonus thing? What item does that?

We really need to speed this process up, as the time for me to put a lid on everything and submit the mod to ModDB is fast approaching. Can't really afford the cat and mouse approach here anymore, so ... please just state plainly what is wrong and what it should be, specifically, specifically, specifically. Otherwise I'm just going to ignore it.

Does the ToEE Brooch of Shielding have limited charges? I am not aware of any.

The ToEE Brooch of Shielding functions like a Shield spell, granting +4 Shield Bonus. It should not.

    Brooch of Shielding

This appears to be a piece of silver or gold jewelry used to fasten a cloak or cape. In addition to this mundane task, it can absorb magic missiles of the sort generated by spell or spell-like ability. A brooch can absorb up to 101 points of damage from magic missiles before it melts and becomes useless.

Faint abjuration; CL 1st; Craft Wondrous Item, shield; Price 1,500 gp.

Okay ... according to its proto entry, the brooch has 20 charges. I understand that the item functions like a wand of shield, but it's not, and I also understand that it does not function like the item it's named after. I don't think it's exceptionally overpowered, but I'm content to make it unavailable due to it being pretty far away from RAW.

Now I see that the only place it appears anyway is in the Bazaar of the Bizarre.
