VP, just a wild guess but you might try editing the relevant files via World Builder instead of Proto-Ed. I recall that the latter featured occasional save corruption. Otherwise I'd like to have a go with your stuff and see if I can see what's what but I'll need to re-remember what the hell I was doing first so that may take some time.

Broken record alert: are you trying all your edits on a new game?

For the record, I've been following this and can't see what the problem is.

ok; i've archived all the relevant files.

this has all my stuff for the 3 spells, 802, 803 and 804

804 - electric jolt, will appear in wizards books but not in spell selection as mentioned - also, it is listed first in the usually alphabetically sorted list - curious :p.

The script for 803 - snowball swarm is probably hopelessly flawed, and doesnt appear anywhere in game yet, really feel free to ignore 803 and 804.

Also, be aware that the partsys file has several old spells replaced with new effects.

The new spell effects are messy line-wise, but seem to load ok in v2brute. (this is only until i work out how to move the lines into neater locations).

The scintillating sphere and snowball swarm effects are located with the fireball effects, and the electric jolt effect is located with ray of enfeeblement (in partsys1).

i'll post again shortly with the tga's and mdf's you'll need for the effects.

for the record: my completely baseless theory is that one of the spells at the end of the list (after teds stuff) could be unfinished, and mucking up subsequent entries.

Of course i have no idea what im talking about :)

ok, here are all the new tgas/mdfs i've made so far.

Not all of them are in use yet, but they all rar'ed into a small enough archive.

    is rar ok?

i can redo them as zip if you want :)

oh, and if you view the radial-lightning1.tga you'll see how i managed to do the shooting off lightning effect :pelvicthr

.rar is fine for me - I got off my lazy backside and installed WinRAR on my laptop. I will have a look at these in KotB and maybe Gaear can do the same in ToEE and we'll see what comes up.

Btw, you owe me a cheese for this.

Ok, found a problem (can't test if this is it yet, still copying the relevant bits in the files):

in spell_enum.mes, line 5746 is missing (should at least have a {} ).

That wasn't the problem :sadblinky I am getting the same as you - Scintillating Sphere only shows after you have chosen all the available ones.

I noticed that, for sorcerers anyway, when you add your spell text files to rules/spells, the spell list doubles the level descriptions. It looks like this:

    Level 0 spells
    Level 0 spells
    -------------
    spell do dah
    spell do dah ...

    Level 1 spells
    Level 1 spells
    -------------
    spell do dah
    spell do dah ...

That can't be good. It may be that spells aren't supposed to go above 800 or something like that. At any rate, I also did not see Electric Jolt in the level 0 list for sorcerers. That's as far as I got so far.

Oh, I also added a set of brackets to 5631 in addition to Ted's 5746 in spell_enum.mes, but I don't know that that did anything. I do note, strangely, that those brackets were in place in the last iteration of that file in the Co8 modpack. Maybe you've got some kind of text corruption going on somewhere, VP.

    mmmmmm, thats worrying :(

i certainly didnt edit that line myself

I also had noted the double spell level thing, occurring on 0 and 1, but wasnt sure which change was the cause of it.

if the spell entries are limited to 800 then that would be very annoying - would mean we're far more limited on space than we thought :(

i'll keep trying to get the spell working in a lower number as well, to test the theory.

    edit:

out of curiosity - were 800 and 801 added by one of the modders? they were listed as dispel magic area and dispel magic target i think from memory.
