My opinion is this...make it something that makes sense. Spell research is constantly ongoing in the D&D multi-verse. It's not too hard to imagine that people would want to find out, more reliably and cheaper, about their magical acquisitions. 5th level with a big fat price tag makes sense to me. But consider this as well: Bards could always use their skills to tell what items were...without magic, but somewhat unreliably at first. Instruments of the Bards would boost this chance, which increaed with level anyway. So, at higher levels, they could tell what's what with accuracy. Hell, I never made the PC's use identify for potions and scrolls in my campaign...unless they wanted to be absolutely certain...even then, cursed items often would read like the true items...so nothing was ever 'certain'. Also...I'd let 'em get by with groups of potions or scrolls or things like that, so if someone could mod ID-ing potions based on level of caster...that might be cool. Add a potion for every other level or something. BTW, these reasons are exactly why I like the read magic fix for potions. It makes sense that a potion crafter could tell with reasonable certainty what a potion really is. Agreement with Krunch; emphasis must be on the story, or the game gets boring & players lose interest...hence, what the author intended.
Good points. So make it a spell for wizards, sorcereres and bards? level 5 spell for wiz/sor and what level for bards?
If no one minds, I'd like for Blue to call the ball on the "bard spell level" for Mass Identify by bards. Unless, someone else, specifically, wants to jump in and call it. I'm confident we'd all agree on his decision of calling the ball for the bard spell level.
Thanks for your vote of confidence Krunch. I would say it should be a 3rd level Bard spell. I would still like to see it be a craftable item though.
We can have both [IMO]. I don't see why it would have to be one or the other and not both. Let's have both added. Anyone object to both being added for specific reasons?
I'm not talking about a wand. If we follow my level suggestions it would be to high a level spell to craft as a wand anyway. I would rather have it as a wonderous item rather than a spell, like Glasses of Identify or something, unlimited uses per day, one time xp and (high) gp cost. Like the Helm of Magic Reading. Speaking of which, if we could make the Helm of Magic reading do a Mass Read Magic, it would be a great time saver and not break anything, as it already has unlimited uses per day.
Ok, that sounds like a plan to me. Just an idea here, but let me quote... Of course some of this is difficult if not imposable to implement in ToEE, but I'm happy to read between the lines and say that "One object" is acually "One person's inventory screen" (this spell name makes the spell seem more authentic anyway).
Blue and Allyx both have good ideas for a magic item and its creation. And, Cujo sounds like he already has the mass portion of the new spell whooped, too. It looks like both the spell and the item are in the works and on the way. Take a look in your data/mes/description.mes file, all the item's names are there, the smyth & westrealm fires Cujo's missiles, just open the console and type... give #### Where #### is the number next to the name of the item you want. get the spell working as I posted above, and i'm sure that "eyes of dweomer analysis" will follow, as it is I found some other item's I can now implement, eyes of petrification anyone?

hmm how hard is spell modding.. id like to see the prismatic____ spells. maybe fire seeds tensers trans would be cool...but i gather that would be a tough one im willing to try tackling these if theres some spell modding help to start off..
