Wizards above 10th level only gain 1 HP per level - no bonus HP for high con scores either... 2e was harsh!

Without re-hashing the whole conversation, my $0.02.

    - restricting wizard spells sounds like an interesting house-rule to be implemented in T+, but
    - agree with Endarire (and Allyx) that in a 3.5 TC, we should follow the 3.5 rules
    - having Orrick (or his minion) sell a changing scroll selection is quite doable (SGoS had something similar)
    - I will resist the inevitable call from the usual riff-raff for all spells to be instantly available as scrolls

Well, in 3.5 a Wizard can add 2 spells (total) of any level they know and must find/research/buy any additional spells when they level up.

They start with all lvl 0 and 3+int bonus level 1 spells

I hated those nonsensical rules. I'm glad 3e fixed them.

I'm one of the few that liked the 2.5E stuff... It took me a while to adjust to 3E, and by that time 3.5E was out. I'm currently still in favor of 3.75E (Pathfinder). I bought the 4E PHB, and hated it instantly. I have a 5E character, but that game is sort of on hiatus due to a certain virus and other factors...

I simply like having all Wizard scrolls to find or buy because no other class has its class features scattered throughout the game world.

Removing free spells for Wiz at level is a house rule worth adding.

Yeah, IMO it would have a huge impact on balance.

OTOH it looks like IWD didn't have Sorcerers, so given that they are available in ToEE this house rule would be practically superfluous since sorcs would instantly be >> than wizards. So maybe you'd need a full 2e makeover ;)

No reason why sorcerers couldn't follow the same house rule

So... sorcerers would need a book too?

Nope, just need to find a spell to *learn* it so it sticks in their mind

Sorcerers (and bards - warmages too) have one sort of restriction, wizards have another. If you want, "give me everything and give it to me now" spellcasters, you play Divine ones. Add house rules all you want, but these core restrictions are there for a reason.

In Pathfinder, Arcanists are the half-way in between version. They can prepare a number of spells per day from their book, and that number is different than the number of spells they can CAST per day. There are other funky aspects to their magic, but that's the gist.

Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition was the version I played and I loved Sors because they had full access to spells at level time! This was wonderful due to the small supply of each arcane spell scroll, often 1 per spell!
