Elmo and 3 Drow are standing in the dungeon discussing religion. The subject of the new years pledges they have made to their gods comes up. Elmo explains how he has pledged to give up drinking this year, and how he has made the same pledge each year for more years than he can remember (at least 1 or 2).

The first Drow relates her pledge, which is to become more ruthless. She goes on about how she has let too many victims live and taken too many prisoner, and about how she has even fed the prisoners and so on.

The second Drow, explains how he has not been subservient enough to his mate, and that his pledge is to fulfill her every desire no matter how demeaning, without any thought for his own well being.

The third Drow begins to laugh and says she has been just like Elmo, making the same pledge year after year but never sticking to it and how she has never suffered any ill effects from it. Finally she says: "I don't think the Gods even care about what we pledge to them. We can do whatever we want and they won't even notice. I have been making the same solemn pledge to Lolth for the last ten years and never have I even tried to live up to it and she hasn't done a damned thing ab..." Just then, a purple and green and black bolt of energy appears out of nowhere, striking the third Drow and leaving only a smoking, humanoid shaped mass of Greasy Charcoal where she used to be.

"Geez, guys, did you see that?" says Ellmo. The other two Drow just stare at him blankly, aghast at what they have just witnessed. Elmo staggers over to the cooling heap of black charcoal, reaches down and snaps off a finger. Bringing it up close to his face, he stares contemplatively at it and says, "You know, maybe I should be gettin' more serious about this soberness thing...." He bends over, charcoal Drow finger held between his index finger and his thumb. And right then and there, on the grey dungeon floor, Elmo Drows the Line

Glad it works. Didn't even think about the lag possibilities, especially with those fights with hordes of bugbears in the Temple. We may have to limit it to major NPCs whose equipment causes problems (like the Broken Tower brigand leader) or there's not better solution, like the Ettin, if there is a problem with lag.

What do you need from me for the next test phase?

There was a young Drowling who tried
To keep on the bitch Lolth's good side
    But offended her badly
    And the goddess then madly
Made a dryder inside her inside.

(Its more an exercise in assonance than humour).

These are all worthy efforts, but the reason they're not quite hitting the mark is that it should start, "Elmo and 3 nice guy Drow that are shunned by their own race 1 are standing in a dungeon . . ."

Again, that is the way that all Drow are. I don't know why I have to keep repeating this. :anger:

I think these drow are the evil half-drow cousins, underneath it all they're just evil elves

Sorry for the delay in answering, Kalshane. Let's see, if you happen to have a log of the changes you made to the invensource.mes that would be much appreciated. If not, don't bother making one now as I can 'diff' your new version with the original and get the changes that way.

Other than that not much right now. Maybe an estimate of how many more changes you are planning on making so we can get an estimate of the final file size.

Unfortunately, no. I only realized I really should by logging my changes in the last week or so and I'm less than halfway through logging my protos changes. I realize I'm not being as detailed with my logs as I should be (rather than saying raised Hide 2 points, lowered Spot 3 points, added Sense Motive with 5 points) I've just been saying "Fixed Skills." There is so much wrong in the protos.tab compared to the PNP rules that documenting each and every number I change and by how much would take the rest of my natural life. (I'm also amazed, in regards to skills and saves, that Troika didn't seem to know how their own engine worked. A lot of times the numbers match those in the Monster Manual, but since the engine calculates in ability and size modifiers and counts all skills as cross-class for non-classed monsters, they end up being really, really wrong.)

When I get home, I could probably breeze through the invensource.mes and list the entry numbers I've changed, as I remember the names of the monsters. Your script is going to completely overwrite the creature's inventory, correct, not just spot replace? If so, I believe you're going to need the entire entry for that creature, not just what changed, correct?

Well, let's see... I've already finished up through the G's, so I think the only things left that would need equipment changes would be hobgoblins, the Water Temple bugbears and any NPCs I come across that have the non-sensical equipment vs. behavior problem. So at most, double whatever the file size is currently, but I'm thinking it's more-likely to be something like 1.5 times the current size. (Current meaning whatever size it is after you do your voodoo with what you have.)

Okay, Kalshane, to avoid taking this thread too much further off topic and hijacking it completely, I am going to reply in your own thread, Okay?

I'm beginning to think that Kalshane's new protos is going to be the most profound change in the game since Liv's spellcaster AI or moebius' DLL changes. We really appreciate all the effort, man.

Edit: And I for one appreciate the fact that someone trustworthy is doing this, and taking the neccesary time to do it right.

    Not a problem.

Thanks. I just have to wonder about what was going on with Troika. So many of the creatures would be "right" if the engine worked differently. My best guess is they changed the way the engine used the protos.tab at some point during the development process and then didn't change how the monsters were statted. I don't know, as I keep saying, I'm not a programmer. It's just mind-boggling.

I just hope, as I'm doing this, people aren't expecting everything to seem totally different when I'm done, because on the surface, it won't be. The majority of the stuff I'm changing isn't even going to be noticable unless you keep your eye on the dice roll window. It's not going to make the game "better" in the sense of Liv's AI improvements and moebuis' .dll fixes made the game a whole lot more playable and interesting (and made this project worthwhile in the first place) but it will make it more internally consistant.
