How do you read notes in TOEE?

I have read through the manual a couple of times but I still can't figure out how to read notes in TOEE.
I have the following items in my inventory but I don't know how to read/use them:

- Lareth's Diary
- Ragged note to Terjon
- Tattered piece of paper

Also, how do I read the shop signs in town?

Pick it up in inventory and drop it on the use button.
