Hallo Has anything changed since last post in that area? I was never able to successfully dispel something from enemies, but because the spell always act as an area one I was always very succesfull in dispeling buff from my team-mates. I have seen the final boss of Fire node succesfulyl dispel my team enchantmets, so it works for my opponents, but somehow not for me.
Well, Dispel magic is very tricky. It's your caster lvl plus other bonuses (int + misc), so if you are low level, you probably can't dispel a Balor spell, while he would have an easy time to dispel yours (Balor, and other creatures with spell like abylities use their levels as a creature, not for class). The roll allowed to you in a d20 roll it's up to 10. For better effects, you have to use "greater dispelling" which let you roll 20 Also, you always can dispel a "friendly Buffer spell" because it's supposed that your friend will allow it (much like Spell resistance, you can "lower" the resistance at will to let a spell affect you) The spell it's an area effect, or a targeted one: you can throw it like a Fireball to release your comrades from a harmful effect, to "debuff" your enemys, or cast it only in a opponent that has mirror spell for example (i've used against Falrinth, you always miss, but i recall once have effect and dispelled his invisibility) It should dispel effectively a magic trap, if it's a "one use" trap (you open a chest an a Acid arrow shoots at you), but it would not against a permanent effect (a chest that traps you inside every time, unless a command word is spoken), rather, as someone says above, you'll disable it temporarily (this works even in items, like a Periapt of wound closure, or even a flaming sword) If you readied an action, and someone cast a spell you can dispel it, provided you have succes in a spellcraft check and recognize the spell, even you can dispel a dispel attempt! Anyway, yes, the spell does work, i don't remember if the area effect is fixed thoug
Thank You for deep reply. Probably You are right. My conclusions weren't referring to a fight with Balor, I was trying to use Dispel Magic more often. It will be easier to live with unsuccessful dispels if the rolls of dispel ties would appear in roll window.
Trying to dispell stuff from high level casters like Z and the Balor are pretty much futile. Break enchantment and dispel charm doesn't work on the Balor's charm and fear spells. It's a tough situation when none of your stuff works but the monsters does.
The best defence I've found against the Balor's charm is casting Protection from (some alignment or another) on each party member before the combat starts. Who'd have thought a first level spell could be so useful against such a foe.
