I personally find a problem with being asked to become a muscle man to convert people in the town to St. Cuthbert - especially since none of my troops follow him (most of them follow GODDESSES). My NG/CG group would find - as I do personally - that task to be completely repugnent. I roll play myself as my character. Many of the side quests cannot be completed without doing just this. My attitude is that religion is a personal thing and that anyone should be allowed to make up their own mind about it without asking someone in a church that wants to control everything whether it is OK or not. I also disagree with the comment that LG is compassionate and caring, etc. - YEAH as long as you agree with their way of thinking. Look at the way they treat Cavanaugh (sp?) if he agrees to pay and then doesn't. I wouldn't have anything to do with a church like that. Just like the middle (dark) ages when the church controlled everyones lives (and death).
St. Cuthbert is LN, not neutral good. And there's only 2 or 3 quests in Homlett (out of two dozen or so) that involve conversions. If you don't want to do them, don't do them and kill a couple more randomly encountered bugbears to make up the missing XP. I skip the vast majority of the Homlett quests just because they're boring and time consuming.
Hey all this thread started out as a legitimate general modification question, how to choose a deity that wasn't available from the deity menu. But now I see it is degenerating into more of a deity opinion thread. If you want to discuss what deities have for breakfast, or parallels between Greyhawk and the Middle Ages, or how you chose to role-play these are all legitimate topics, in the appropriate thread. But lets confine this thread to general modification please.
Then, let's get the ball rolling. I'll get it started by stating the following. Deity availability is based on the race that is selected in the character generator when making a new character.
Yes it is Krunch and it was purposely built into the engine to limit the deity and alignment choices, it would take a .dll hack and more to sort it out to make things work for everyone. The diety and the alignment however can both be modified, either from the console or using a character editor, and the ins and outs of that were touched on early in this thread. This would be a great place to document kind of a wish list of how we would like to see the game engine modified, if that option ever becomes available. or A place for people to post how they work around the current limitations, for easy reference going forward. I really have no opinion on this other than if I know what the community would like to see, if I ever accidentally come across a way to make it happen while researching something else, it just may click.
I changed Fruella to chaotic good in the protos and gave her Pelor for a diety . Now she can use Scather and get the AoO for CG. Meleney would be a good candidate, with a nice Royo portrait. Works for me.
It would be nice if deity, alignment, and reputation meant something and had a visible effect in the game. There are cases where alignment comes into effect,(Thrommel reward, brothel, etc) but I think an extensive change is not feasible. The work involved probably would not justify the results, if even possible. There's a limit to just how much can be done. Yes, a 3GB game that does every thing could be done in 2 or 3 years with about 60 writers. Wishful thinking. I
Yup, something third-party can also be written to serve as an extended character generator for the game. With the latest version of my object file format codec (v1.0.5 which is included with the latest WB) this is going to be an easy task, although I'm not sure if someone feels up to doing this at the very moment (as far as I see the priority of work at the Co8, this is not the top priority for today). - Agetian
[cough] That list is copyright, Krunch. I don't think its gonna change too much in KotB, I have pretty much made the decision that party alignment not individual speaker alignment will dictate things: it gets too messy otherwise. There will still be plenty of room for deity-related shenanigans, with clerics or representatives of... hmmmm... at least 8 dieties playing a roll (not counting the Temple of Evil Chaos itself). Of course, if people want to expand these, they are most welcome!
Ok, the bonehead question: Can the game be modified to allow OTHER Greyhawk deities such as Mayaheine or Celestian?
