Is this Kobort & Toruko...? This never would have happened if he'd only been equipped with a Staff-Spear... :cool2:
At this time it would be nice to note that the goal of the DnD rules is not realism, it is good gameplay and balanced gameplay. It seems to me that argument for removing the feat requirement is coming from realism. This is wrong. Ted's argument is from gameplay and is very defensible. You can't just dismiss it, but you can argue both sides and state your opinions on the matter. Realists: Apply the realism argument to the rest of the weapon proficiencies, and when you're done, call it Bobo's Gaming World or whatever. But that's not what we're here for.
hit he nail on the head Ugig the rules are there for reason, you dont have to like em but this conversation has alrdy occured 100's of times in millions of DnD communities and in fact 3rd edn DnD is the result of those 100000's of disscusions, just go with rules pls or at totaly as possibly close to rules.. with the current game engine.... and lock this topic off...thx
I believe there shouldn't be feats for both, as in each must have its own feat; the rules in this aspect are completely wrong; IMO - there should only be just one feat for using all crossbows to include light, heavy, repeating, and other crossbows. If the rules were to single out Drow hand and [if used] Drow repeating hand crossbows as they are intended to be exclusive to the Drow race where locating and receiving appropriate training is very rare at best, I could agree with that. My decision about this is not due to a realism thing or a simple preference. Originally, I said "Characters are a smarter than monkeys in most cases. Crossbows are very simplistic. A fighter whose livelihood and life depends on weapons and a wizard with due to their intelligence would be able to figure out how to reload a repeating crossbow. It's not rocket science and it's not rubiks cube; it's not like a character with the two weapon fighting feat is attempting to learn how to do the seven rings with two swords. No character in any game will design and build one. So, no feats." I stand by this. The one point of D&D has always been one of rulebooks and their content are always only just a guide, nothing more and is never a list of game laws. D&D rulebooks were never intended to be a "By the Letter of the Rules", but rather intended to be a "By the Spirit [Intent] of the Rules" of which is supposed to provide a reasonable and common sense set of guidelines to follow as "Rules of Thumb", not "Immutable Law". [EDIT] It is truly far better and a world of real fun and completely enjoyable to get lost in the spirit of the game rather than get lost in a set of books and sequences of rules - hence, ShiningTeds Desperate Housewives Quest and Livonyas Skeletal Priest [and changes to Emridy Meadows].
Regardless of our various opinions on this, I don't see how we can get around Kalshane's logic, which already appeared above and which seems to adequately address every objection I've seen so far in this thread. Given that this game is a CRPG and is not DMed by any living person, we have to stick with the rules whenever possible to maintain our credibility as a modding community. This has been the standard for Co8 since before most of you were even around. Now's not the time (and ours is not the place) to create a 'Brave New World' of D&D. I think it's time we put this topic to bed. :tombstone
What Gaear said. Do we want to make this an even better D&D CRPG for the masses, or do we want to turn it into our own house rules game.
I thought the whole point of this poll was it see if we should "House Rules" the damn thing, which I think we should. well ok, whatever, I don't care, do what you want- the simple solution is that I just don't use the new weapons and never find out what I'm missing.
Yah, no one in their right mind will take two feats just to use one normal weapon. If the weapon is modded to bend and, or break rules by modded magic ability where the added magical ability obviously outweighs requiring two feats to use it - Honestly, having to add magic ability to make a weapon attactive enough to use just because of an idea that weapons feats rules cannot be bent is somewhere between dumb and stupid. As a plain jane weapon, no one will use it. [EDIT] Here's a good one for the rules lawyers. While we are discussing this, monsters in D&D have character classes, too - right? That means the monsters [all goblinoids and minotaurs, etc.] should all be required to allocate two of their Feats to use this weapon in addition to PCs and NPCs. Can't bend the rules in the instance for this weapon, right?
Somehow I should be happier about causing this ruckus... Thanks for all those folks who took the time to listen to my position (whether agreeing or disagreeing), at least we have had a sensible discussion and not just stubborn arguing. Dontcha love Co8? Personally I am satisfied that the repeater deserves a feat if it adds both rapid reloading AND the ability not to draw AoOs. I will attempt to add both full repeaters (albiet the feat will have to await Brad) and magical auto-cockers once my Moathouse hack is done.
@krunch - Thanks for helping to calm this discussion. Ted already seems to have accepted the marginally prevailing trend of opinion in this thread, likely seeing that the debate is no longer limited to a simple request for a custom weapon. Why are you still shaking the bushes? @Cujo - Sorry if I'm off the mark here, but your tone seems to imply that you perceive some type of 'good old boys' network at work here. If so, I don't particularly care for that insinuation. It's not the naysayers who are going to "do what we want." It's the yea-sayers who are asking to do something out of the ordinary. The other side wants to do nothing. Let's not skew the debate.
Where are you getting two feats from, Krunch? In order to use a repeating crossbow, you only have to take one feat: Exotic Weapon Proficiency for the crossbow in question.
Hippocrates said "First, do no harm..." I think we should stick to this. We're trying to make a better game for everyone, as best as is humanly possible within the existing framework of rules and modding capabilities. It won't be perfect; and it is definetly not easy. If this were the case, then everyone could make whatever modifications they choose to their own games, and there'd be a zillion games out there...not one of which would likely be ToEE. Maybe not even D&D.
A repeater doesn't require rapid reload. Its entire purpose is that it allows a character to make a full attack action, whereas one needs rapid reload to do so with a light crossbow and can't do it at all with a heavy crossbow.
