Yea Ted, exact same thing happens to me. I'm near the end of playing 7.3 NC having just the last balors fight remaining. The jerkstops in Hommlet happen for me after clearing the druid's, inn, church and keep and nearby patrols and then approaching the southern and southwestern stationary groups. My workaround was to initiate combat and move as a normal turn move towards them, one character at a time but any spell or arrow causes the game to permahang, so the last two groups were dealt with melee weapons only.

Additionally, the hexorites are not animated at all until attacked individually and sometimes there was a 10-20 second delay until the next unit or character was allowed thier normal combat turn. Even after the entire encounter ends and you've spoken with Arakias the jerkstop remained for me close to the inn, I belive due to the large number of bodies remaining. I did pickup weapons and helms from the hexorites as I went along but I left many boots, gloves and cloaks about which may contribute to the stoppage but that's just a guess. Leaving Hommlet and coming back a day later clears the bodies but not the remaing loot but the stoppage is gone.

If I understand Gaear's 7.6 changelog correctly, adding a fog of war should completey alleviate this but hopefully anyone else, like us still stuck in past versions, can find a way through it without too much trouble. I'm looking forward to 8.0 and with 6 archers in my group a boyer who sells arrows in Verbo sound great.

Well jerkstop is no longer an issue in WotGS-Hommlet as of 7.4 I think due to staging it on a new map, so you guys are behind the times. ;)

Thanks for the trouble reports Ted, I'll check into them. Ariakas is supposed to denounce you as a deserter if you take too long to address the issue once it's started (e.g. napping at the town elder's), but if you leave and come back, Hommlet should be a ghost town, Ariakas included.

Ariakas died while in your party?

Rather than e-mail or voicemail I first thought of the proclamations of the City Council of New Phlan in Pool of Radiance

After installing and playing the Co8 mod with the new content for the first time I have a few problems.

I do have "humble NPC´s" checked in the options, however e.g. the thief from the Inn in Hommlet won´t let me move his magic dagger or ring of invisibility to my own rogue. Not even if he is uncounscious from a fight. Normal items like his shortsword or leather armour I can move without problems. Is that intended to be so? And will I be able to move those magic items when I manage to have him killed - accidentaly of course?

Black Jay: I spoke to him but he hasn´t anything to say to my lawful neutral party. After speaking to him I searched for the goblin that the map at gamebanshee mentioned that is supposed to have his dead wifes ring - but no goblin can be found.

And when I pick up the hemlock behind his house I can speak to Jaroo about that herb but not to Black Jay...?

I have wooed the farmers daughter to get the "holy sword +1" from her father and to get the quest "sweeping her from her feet" that is mentioned in a walkthrough.
However in my log book I only find a solved quest "flirting with disaster" and the sword is a "radiant sword" instead of a holy sword +1?

    Hi Conjurerdragon
    In answer to your questions:
I think there are some things that NPCs still try to keep hold of- current implementation of humble NPCs will let you level them up and buy them gear (which they won't then just sell on), but they don't just hand stuff over.
Black Jay's ring had been moved- location varies by party alignment IIRC- mainly because having a single goblin wandering round over the road on its own with it was a bit lame.
Holy weapons tend to be described as 'radiant' when you first pick them up- if you get it identified (e.g. by a shopkeeper) it will be renamed in more detail. Some of the Hommlet quests have been changed in the modpack to make them more nuanced. Another alternative is to talk to Brother Smyth to find alternatives to what are sometimes refered to as fedex quests in Hommlet.
Have a look for Gazra's guide and walkthrough for more info. Happy questing!

I managed to get Furtok? (the thief from the inn) killed n a random encounter with two of those giant scorpionlike things and when dead he stopped to his objection to my removal of his magic items. ;)

Did that and I found the ring mentioned in a subpoint of one of the messages
    http://www.co8.org/forum/showpost.php?p=104893&postcount=10
So it´s somewhere. But when Jay won´t talk to me about his sheep or his wifes ring do I get ANY hint ingame where to find it when the goblin is no longer where he was?

I have already spoken to the blacksmith and once returned from Welkwood bog in the company of the guard captain only to find out that the militia captain now takes me for a drunk adventurer who sees things...

    To add to Nightcanon -

Most NPCs that have identity-specific or quality gear won't just turn it over to you, as that would be somewhat unrealistic. Some of them have dialogues that will allow you to buy their gear from them at varying times (such as after they get to know you better), but not all. This irregularity is mainly due to the time and effort involved to write and script all that involves for each of them. Basically we wanted to make the NPCs somewhat more autonomous than the wholesale Humble NPCs method without going back to the silliness of vanilla. :)

    [edit]

Black Jay will confide in you about his sheep after you've gained his trust by giving him his wife's ring. There are no hints, but it will be in the possession of some creature that most every player will encounter unless you're sneaking through the game.

p.s. - I like the Phlan reference ... good times.

    It does bring back memories...
Yes indeedy. Those damn assassins made mincemeat of my spell-casters more than once, too.

That's why the assassins are always first on my hit list when attacking groups of Hextorites without spellcasters.

    Hey ConjurerDragon,

Some creatures don't actually highlight when you tab or mouse over them, but the DO have certain items that can be returned to certain people and that's for certain.

I certainly said certain a bunch of times. :p

I think that jerkstop was eradicated from the War of the Golden Skull in the Co8 modpack 7.5.0 NC.

Reading this reminded me of how I used to recruit a Hero (i.e. a level 4 fighter) NPC from the resettled area of New Phlan, then go into the monster-infested blocks of Old Phlan, fight monsters and then turn on the hero at the end of a combat, kill the hero, loot his Two-Handed Sword +1, and then rinse and repeat. It seems evil when I think back upon it now

ConjurerDragon, highlight the blank area below (by left-clicking and dragging your mouse) to see the hidden text (spoiler) below:

(note: the first hidden paragraph below was taken from the game guide & walkthrough sticky thread. If you are looking for an answer to a question that you have, then try doing a word search in the game guide & walkthrough sticky thread first (e.g. a word search for "Black Jay"))

Black Jay's ring is in one of 3 possible locations in the game (the location depends on your party alignment). 2 of the possible locations are: on one of the Giant Spiders' corpses in Deklo Grove; on one of the Giant Frogs' corpses outside the Moathouse. If your party alignment is Evil, then the ring is on the giant spider's corpse in the mouthouse tower.

You need to go behind Black Jay's home at night and talk to the boy. Once you've done that, you will be able to talk to Black Jay about his sheep.

The Verbobonc patrol captain who escorted you back to Hommlet from Welkwood Bog was actually just an illusion. You should return to Welkwood Bog and clear the place out of all monsters!

Many recruitable NPCs will let you take their items. Some recruitable NPCs will only let you take their items once you've levelled them up 1 experience level and then bought their items from them (you buy their items by talking to them). Some recruitable NPCs will never let you take 1 or more of their items (I think that Furnok and Serena won't willingly relinquish their Rings of Invisibility (but I could be wrong), Prince Thrommel will never willingly relinquish Fragarach, and I know from bitter experience that Burne won't relinquish ANY of his items (which is a royal pain in the arse because his items use up a LOT of his inventory space!)).

Sigh, I guess that I will have to stop my addiction to the computer game The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and start converting the game guide sticky thread into a proper walkthrough... :dizzy:

Of course that is evil. I never did THAT. I recruited two heros and then went for the hardest fight in the slums for a starting party (the one with the two trolls and two Ogres if I remember that right) and put them in the front line for that fight so that the monsters killed them and I could take their 2 two-handed-swords+1. ;)

Thankyou for the hint about the ring.

You want to translate it yourself, or you're hoping someone else will? If the first, you should post an outline of what you want to do in the Modding forum. If the second, you're probably out of luck, although Morpheus had done a translation way back in the old days.

Really? I thought you had an incident or two in the latest version.

I guess we should have a look at him, thanks. To be clear, the proper way to go about this is to restrict item transfers on significant gear initially, and have that relaxed as you go on (at least for some NPCs), the way Ted has done it in the past. It's just a pita to go to those lengths; much easier just to flag the items on join and disband.
