You will have to pardon me but I disagree about the rusty dagger going back to vanilla. The rifts were added to the game sometime between 5.5.0 and 5.8.1. The dagger appeared at this time as well.

Trust me, I am not offended or miffed. I will freely admit I am not an expert on the game and the versions, so if I am wrong, I am cool with the correction.

Well I can not speak for any other items, but that dagger does not work for me. I tried every which way to access it and pick it up and nothing ever worked. First time I ever saw it, I thought it might be something like the child's toy from the Frogger area but as I could not reach it, just had to let it be.

They were all there before the rifts. In fact, I've never seen them since the rifts. I don't look for them.

There were 2 items north of the giant and something near the east side, iirc.

On my current play through I have a nice mix of classes and sizes, and what is amusing is my little halfling druid not only having animal companions two to four times bigger than her, but watching her run up and knee cap this monsters with her trusty small size staff.

Shame that this game did not have mounts, as it would be nifty to have little Bit of Nasty charging into battle on her War Bear.

(Little bit of trivia, which DnD game had that line0War Bears?)

Playing 5.92 and I kill off Lareth and do the usual selling of his boots to Rannos and Gremag, yet this time the assassin never shows up. I tried reloading three times before selling and then traveling up and down the road to Nulb and HB, and everyone but that mother shows up in random encounters. I even tried traveling for 5 weeks and racking all kinds of xp and that idiot never showed.

I am not sure what I did to seeming give Rannos and Gremag the idea that I was a bad mudder and not to be bothered. I reloaded and tried a last time, and then said the hell with it and attacked them. I let them escape and now I will see if the will show up for the ambush in my marsh filled house or if they decided to just on to Dyvers or Iuz's hometown.

Just was hoping to get some nice goodies for my party, like that nice mithril coat and gloves to help my monk. Oh well lose some and live with the concequences.

Don't you have to talk to them after selling the item? I thought that set up the encounter.

May just be my bad memory, but usually I just sell off the boot, encounter the assassin and THEN go back to talk to the with the evidence of the note and map.

Using a reach weapon AND a buckler only does 1x Strength Bonus damage for me as well, cezmail.

Ok, I realize that this time I was stupid and did talk to Burne about the delays at the Castle, so that is why I borked the assassin encounter. Still will have to see if Rannos and gang show up in Nulb as I did run them out of town in Hommlet.

Thanks for the confirmation about reach weapons and buckler fiasco Gazra. I will have to check my Rsrd when I get home, as I did find out I was in the wrong with the monk flurry of blows and not getting the bonus. Per the rules, monks only get the base bonus, no multipliers with the staff.

Hope some of my ramblings are of some interest to a few of you. If not you can at least take delight with my idjit posts. :)

Can you explain your solution to the assassin problem? He is not coming after me either after I sell the boots. Burne told me to look into the shipment problem, but I have done nothing to pursue that quest though.

Does knowing about the problem automatically stop the assassin?

Someone pointed out that if you talk to Jafie and get him to spill the beans, you should NOT talk to Burne and Rufus until after you sell the boots and be attacked by the assassin. Only after that you should talk to the cowards in the tower who are making you do their dirty work.

I will wait to see what happens, if anything, to get Rannos and his gang of Thugs at the house in Nulb. I confronted them and just had enough of their BS so attacked them, but allowed them to run away. No assassin on this play through, but that is how the fireball bounces.

SPOILER (for assassin & Gremag + Rannos Davl):

I have done this as well and found that things will balance out in the end. In fact, you will still face the assassin even if you do not sell any of Lareth's stuff. What you need to do is what you did - chase the two traders out of town. Those two will confront you in Nulb in your house and in addition to their usual gang, they will also have the assassin with them. That assassin comes out in a wicked place when he is with this group so be careful (I have to leave a little mystery). Oh, and the assassin still is nice enough to carry that note of his.

One thing to note, if you go this route, you will not get the Retribution quest from Burne.

One thing I just discovered, but as with some of my other posts may not be new to others. It seems a wild shaped druid is able to talk to and trade all over Hommlet. This may have to Jaroo playing Hanky Panky with the sheep all over time.

Just tried my female druid was able to talk it up in Nulb as well. Adds some meaning to the Bestiality complaints about the Brothel. :D
