The only times you really need money is in the early game to properly outfit your party, and late in the game when you need the money to craft things. Their are not that many magic items to buy, yes you may want the holy mace from Tergon or some scrolls from Burne, but there is no magic merchant like you see in most other games, what you find is better than what you can buy. By hitting a few random road encounters early, you can rack up some decent XP while collecting some looted equipment to use or sell. Nothing like hitting a few easy skeletons or pirates to gain some need arrows and bolts, and some swords and axes to sell. Late in the game, just rest in the temple, I particularly like level 3, the round room you start in for ettins & hill giants, the gems they drop are well worth the effort, and you need extra XP as well as the gold to craft most things.
Hi For what it's worth (pardon the pun: I didn't mean it. Honest  ) You really don't need to do any fancy tricks to get enough money to craft whatever items you need. I just finished crafting the last items for my party before going into the Fire Node. Below is the list of crafted items that my party member have. For weapons and armor, notes in ( ) indicate what the item was when acquired. After all crafting was completed my party still has 42,326 GP in the "Bank". Elmo +3 Holy, Shocking Burst, Icy Burst Battle Axe ( the +1 Battle Axe he starts with ) Large Shield +3 ( The +2 Shield he starts with ) Blue Elven Chain Vest of Escape Fighter +3 Holy, Shocking Burst, Icy Burst Ranseur (the +1 Holy Ranseur from the Air Temple) Purple Elven Chain +3 (Purple Elven Chain (+2) ) Mithral Buckler +3 (Mithral Buckler) Belt of Giant Strength +6 Gloves of Dexterity +2 Cleric +3 Holy, Shocking Burst, Icy Burst Longsword (+1 Holy Longsword from Fillikin) Mithral Plate +3 (Mithral Plate) Metal Tower Shield +3 (Masterwork Metal Tower Shield) Belt of Giant Strength +6 Helm of Reading Magic Druid +3 Holy, Shocking Burst, Icy Burst Sling (Masterwork Sling) +3 Holy, Shocking Burst Scimitar (Masterwork Scimitar) Moon-Ivy Armor +3 (Masterwork Moon-Ivy Armor) Darkwood Buckler +3 (Darkwood Buckler) Wizard +3 Holy, Shocking Burst, Icy Burst Repeating Crossbow (IoIo's Joy: +2, "Sonic") Gloves of Dexterity +2 Wand of Break Enchantment Wand of Stoneskin Wand of Mage Armor Wand of Identify Rogue/ Wizard +3 Holy, Shocking Burst, Icy Burst Composite Longbow (MW Composite Longbow: STR 12) Gloves of Dexterity +2 Meleny +3 Holy, Shocking Burst, Icy Burst Repeating Crossbow (MW Repeating Crossbow from the Tailor in Hommlet) Gloves of Dexterity +2 NOTE: At the moment Meleny has a suit of Small Masterwork Studded Leather Armor and a Darkwood Buckler that are not enchanted (I could if I wanted to, I'm still trying to decide). I was able to get the funds to do the crafting from sell items found in Welkwood Bog, the Moathouse, Emridy Meadow, Nulb, Hickory Branch, The Moathouse Respawn, The Temple and the Air, Earth, and Water Nodes. I did not do any "Exp. Farming", but I have fought every Random Monster I have encountered (not many, and none of them were carrying the Bank of England on their shoulders). As you can see, you can do a lot of crafting with the money you get in the regular encounters in the game (it might be interesting to see how much crafting you can do without the "New Content) The Royal Canadian
its intresting to see, too, that if ya have some character with the Appraise skill and have skills points to keep it growing up, just keep some itens that are expensible in the beggining of the game, and sell then later, when the appraise of the char - and maybe his Charisma - becomes higher. Itens that worth more than 1000 gp (I keep all and any itens that worth more than 500 gp) in the first levels of the game - as capes of elvenkind and some jewells, if I shall remenber - will become much more worthfull after in the game, that is when ya really need the founds. I usually keep that magic chest form the moathouse zombie full of jewells and magic stuff to sell, but before to get it, I have the habit to use that barrels around Hommlet as temporary deposits!
I love to dump the junk you can't sell, but never know what to do with, into the barrels and the well outside the jeweler's. I find just dumping stuff on the ground slows my load time, so I never leave anything lying around, unless its a random map.
