Ok, for the curious amongst you all, a little update. The cat just gained lvl 4, and with that extra Barbarian HD, it has now more HP as either my sorceror, rogue/wizard or bard/rogue.
And as you all know, lvl 4 means stat upgrade. See here, the current stats for my cat. (note, I upgraded dex. I'd rather nullify the neg str bonus and get an AC upgrade as getting maybe a bit more damage dealing capacities - though that's what I intend to do once it reaches lvl 8 )

Also, I give all of you -who would try to get such fine familiar followers- a warning. The game obviously did not count on anybody reckless enough to follow this tactic involving familiars, and often goes tilt. About 1 in 3 random encounters while travelling causes ToE to Crash to Desktop, so frequent saving before setting off is a must.
This is exactly what just happened again to me, but well - it gave me the chance to give you all a heads-up.

Anyhow, now it's time to wrench out the last 400 xp so that my humanoid partymembers can reach lvl 6. ;)

Would a monk cat gain a flurry of blows for each of its attacks?

Who ever heard of a "lawful" cat? Shouldn't they be chaotic by default? It would be very interesting though. A cat monk/rogue

Well, on the subject of alignment... It's a familiar, normally they have the same alignment as their master. So yes, in se, a cat familiar - coming from a lawfull character, who you then get killed - could be trained up as a monk.
    "Flying paw of Buddha! Meeeeoww!!!"
Normal cats in d&d are by default True Neutral, like any other Animal.

Now, as I stated in post n°15, yes, cats can Weapon finesse their claws. That's also the reason why you see such a high Bab for its primary weapon.

Now, the other thing with cats is, they can carry stuff, but can not equip it. I have tried about everything - except for belts, bracers or amulets- and this far it has been impossible.
Also, when I click on how its Bab gets calculated, it gives a +1 bonus because of a "handle objects: null". I think it is not something you can change, so I guess the cat will loose its edge after a while, as the lack of gear will cripple its usefullness.

You would think rings, bracers, and necklaces would work.

    And yet...

My Belt of Giant Strength +6 can not be made into a leash.

And I can verify that Weapon Finesse does in fact work. Gave my kitten an additional +6 to it's attacks. It was fantastic!

So Tathum, it seems you got yourself a cat familiar too? So, how is Scruffy coming along? What class(es) have you assigned to him?

just found out it is relatively simple to farm those familiar npc's by just hiring a mage or sorceror, asking him to summon a familiar, let it roam free and then kicking that spellcaster out of your party - voila, instant succes.

Then, from the moment you change map (from the inn to hommlet, for example) you'll be able to assign its first level.

If you rehire the spellcaster, he still recognises the familiar as his one, so you'll find yourself the smallest bit limited in the n° of these npc's.

I tried with an older savegame to get myself a hawk, & they make better druids, as it had a +2 wis modifier. Probably also a better fighter, as it only had a -2 str modifier.
Also, the hawk looks like a little Vroc :)

This means that one could in fact have virtual zoo almost from the beginning of the game. Make yourself some extra sorcerors when beginning a new game, let them summon their familiars and set those free, and then let them be carefully eaten by any enemy you encounter. The sorcerors, not the familiars ;) When the sorcerors are dead, you can remove them from your party, though their familiars stay at your side. Then you can continue with your re-edition of animal farm :p
