in the L.E. vignette Toruko state your quest is to find "THe Hateful Sword" (Fragarach) and bring it to him, being alligned to the opposite allignment on both good - evil and law - chaos axis' He (and I presume Hextor) wants this artifact destroyed.

This has nothing to do with the issue at hand but:
I beg to differ - my copy of T1 mentions both.
"Both are servants of the ToEE, reporting activity in Hommlet via a brigand courier..."
"A groom (stats) and a man at arms with longbow and sword (stats) will hire out on orders from the traders..."
Lord Spike pointed out to me that the courier is now in the barn in place of the groom, but otherwise they are there

Like I said, Allyx, Hextor does not seem to fit into the grand design of Greyhawk politics vis-a-vis the Temple. Return to ToEE has an amazing 20-year posterity view (both accepted and true history) of the events we are discussing here.

In any case, I am just curious why the Deklo encounter has this variance. It was designed by Co8, right? It was cool that they asked my NE group to carry a message from Eclavdra to Lareth, but why should Turuko's presence change that? Ah, perhaps KOBORT is secretly working with the drow.

Also noteworthy: Eclavdra worships the Elder Elemental Eye in 1.0, then learns the truth about Tharizdun in 3.0 RToEE (20 years later) and in 3.5 Atones and serves Lolth as her 21st level high priestess.

@Ted -- yeah, I found what you mentioned it. It's in the main town description, I was looking in the detailed description section when I answered. My bad.

Anyway, I can see why Troika didn't add the horses (well, not really -- c'mon guys, Ultima 7 had mounts, hell it had a friggin' magic carpet to ride), but I think the dogs are doable.

    :)
I think it would be kind of funny if the PCs ran the traders out of town just for shady business practices and never found out they were agents of Evil.

    From the Simpsons:

Bart: "Way to go dad! You shot zombie Flanders!"
    Homer: "Flanders was a zombie?"
    :)

I tried with Zert, Spugnoir and Ronald and got the normal dialog routine.

Hmmm. To kill or not to kill? Go for big XP (because the drow fights like a moron - shooting a crossbow in melee and not using the sleep bolts), or take the note to Lareth? Hmmm.

Also, is the current consensus that the evil threesome can never have been hired if the ambush is desired?

Yes? If you've already hired the NPCs, taken them somewhere else and left them, killed them off, or have them in the party when the time comes, then the encounter would make no sense.

Obviously those contingencies make no sense. But taking them to Deklo or the orc caves and returning them safely to the Wench, parting ways, and them ambushing the party at the moathouse does make sense.

Since computers don't use sense, does the scripting require that they have never been hired?

Also, anyone know about the story between Turuko and Al the Deklo drow?

My apologies for asking a covered question. I had seen it before but when I went to search for it, I read all the older posts which colored my thinking when I read the Common Issues sticky. Although not as clear, it should have been clear enough to me.

Still curious about Al the Deklo drow, though. Was this an original or Co8 mod encounter? Just so I can learn how to do this, how do you change his fighting strategy? He should kick the crap out of my 2nd level party but because he continues to use his crossbow when surrounded, we bring him down by Aopps. Also, his sleep bolts don't work, which might explain the intention to use them "at all costs (Aopps)."
