Let's say you write your My Documents folder and other folders to CDR disks. And, let's say you buy Norton Antivirus 2007 and PestPatrol 2007. Plus, you do a complete new-from-scratch full install of Windows XP [meaning you delete everything when installing XP]. If you buy Norton Antivirus 2007 and buy PestPatrol 2007 and you install both [and update both over the Internet] after doing the new install of XP, there are two things that come to mind.

    (1) Your new full install of Windows XP would be nicely protected, itself.

    (2) It may OR may not be safe. Odds are good that Norton and Pestpatrol, together, will catch infected files either being copied or later attempting to run in memory and prompt you to let the protection software dispose of the infected files. There is a good chance you are safe, but nothing is absolute - except for one brand of vodka.

However, I will say this. If you do a complete new full install of Windows XP and use anything other than Norton Antivirus 2007 for virus protection and anything other than PestPatrol 2007 for antispyware protection where you copy files from the CDR disks to the computer, you are foolhardy.

Additionally, I will also say this. If you do a complete new full install of Windows XP and use no or bad antivirus and do not use any active antispyware protection where you copy files from the CDR disks to the computer, you are a glutten for punishment and deserve what you get.

Question: Is McAfee wildly inferior to Norton?

Answer: That depends on your Internet usage and habits.
    * If you never visit any risky websites [pornographic, gambling, similar] AND you never let kids, children or adults [other than yourself] use your computer AND you almost never download files from websites AND you do not use any p2p software AND you do not feel obligated to open strange looking email messages that tempts & begs you to open them or their attachments, etc., you are okay using McAfee.

Personally, myself, I do not trust McAfee antivirus.

I guess that's why it runs so well with toee then (as in, it doesn't interfere with ^anything^).

McAffee Antivirus and Antispyware software is good, but they are not great programs. McAffee Antivirus is better than free versions of antivirus software. If someone visits pornographic download sites or uses p2p software to download files, McAffee is weak as far as antivirus and antispyware protection is concerned. It's not bad software, rather they are not in the better class or top-end of [pay for and buy] antivirus and antispyware programs.

Hey, I use AVG Free and my porno downloads are problem free every time, although they do still tend to be a bit slower than normal during nights and weekends on average. :errf:

Yeah AVG is decent, my favorite is actualy Avast and it's also free for home use. I ran Norton for years and it's good, I swithced to Avast because it does at least as good a job (it's caught something Norton missed twice, never the reverse) and uses a lot less computer resources doing it. It's actualy the only AV software I recomend through my shop (and sadly no kickbacks, damn free software;) )

I will say no antivirus is perfect. However, In the corporate world of IT environments, Symantec Antivirus is # 1, and for home computer users Norton Antivirus is # 1. I have seen Symantec and Norton Antivirus, both, find and remove viruses others could not. Norton Antivirus starting with NAV 2005 and, especially, NAV 2006 saw NAV providing protection that outdoes the competition.

AVG FREE is solid. And yes, AVAST! FREE provides more and better antivirus protection than AVG, but AVAST is most definitely a resource hog and should only be used on newer computers. I would only suggest using AVAST on newer computers with a minimum of a 2 GHz processor and 768 MB or more of memory.

AVG is the best free antivirus solution for older computers and computers running Windows 98 and 98 SE. I would recommend new computers with 1 GB memory and running Windows XP can [or should] use AVAST.

AVG is the best overall FREE antivirus solution to provide good protection and not use a lot of computer resources as long as people are not, purposefully, tempting fate with their Internet, browsing and download habits. There's an old saying made popular in the Forest Gump movie, "stupid is as stupid does".
