    I'd just like to chime in, after this discussion here, that as much as I enjoyed playing 1st and 2nd Ed, I am so happy with the current rules set. No Thac0, high roll/number is always good, no weapon speeds, no spending 1 minute at a time facing in one direction hacking away, rules and ability scores that are consistent for both PCs and monsters, humans don't suck, and all kinds of character customization options.

    I enjoy the 3.0 and 3.5 rules as I've seen them implemented in ToEE and NWN, but I've never played them in PnP fashion. :-(

    Yes, there were shortcomings in the previous editions. We worked around a majority of them and changed some rules to suit the way we wanted to play, such as adding critical hits and fumbles. Our group used the crit and fumble tables from Arduin Grimoire, which had some very nasty and usually lethal critical hits as well as humorous and sometimes painful fumbles.
