I've known Lord_Spike over at the Atari boars for some time . . . very knowledgable and capable fellow. Spike, if you're there, what say you to this proposal? (I've got my hat in hand and I'm off to do whatever it is I do, so I probably won't be around til sometime tomorrow . . . hope to see some interesting progress when I get back.) gaear edit: whoops, let's just pretend this post preceded the one above . . . ;-)
This would be even easier than what I was planning. To be honest, I got to really dislike those books in Baldur's Gate. I ended up just ignoring them after awhile, hoping I wasn't missing important clues to the game. Perhaps if I avoid putting "History of the North" in every third house, it will help. Which is not to say I don't see their value; they just seemed more like "homework" than play when I was playing. I'm certainly happy to include this idea. It's easy, and will provide an excellent tutorial on adding a type of object to the game that I don't believe is overly common. And like I said, with some restraint, it will likely work better (in BG, it felt like they started to use the books to "fill in" areas with "stuff" -- I'd get to a bookcase, and just sigh over the implied extra work). It would likely be best to type up text, .zip it up, and then attach it here (well, not here, the modding forum), rather than the raw text going into posts. -- dulcaoin
