As far as the level 4 trap is concerned, is it about time we scrapped the trap in it's current incarnation, and added a ground trap? 2 years after Livonya added this trap I still don't know who has the password. :scratchhe

Our good friend Axl may have a point here. Liv's been done with Co8 for a long time now, and while it may seem questionably pragmatic, I wonder how true we are obligated to remain to an element of a mod that never really worked out that well in application.

Could we just stick some regular old one-time trap there to punish players for crossing that threshold, or does it have to be complicated and somehow symbolic of approaching Hedrack's inner sanctum?

From a story and a game play point of view, I always liked the idea of a good solid trap that had to be passed to get to the Temple's upper brass, and a password to allow minions to wander safely makes sense. However, it never really worked right. Replacing it with a more traditional trap is, imo, a valid change if (as is the case) Liv isn't willing to come back and tweak it.

When I stepped awa from my own BGI and II mods two or three years ago, I gave two of the modders I was working with permission to do what they wanted with the content. Any chance Liv might give similar permission to tweak her stuff?

My $.02 is to disable her trap in favor of a Glyph of Warding (or Guards & Wards). The residents can still have a password to bypass them.

It's too bad that the original module's version of a trap couldn't be implemented. It would have been located behind the altar in the Greater Temple, and was a curtain made from enchanted Violet Fungi that withdrew when presented with they TZGY Scarab. Persons approaching without it were struck by tentacles that inflicted rot.

Very groovy. It would also give a point to the TZGY Scarabs. Any way to set a trap to check for them, going off if not presented?

Yeah, you definitely have a point here. The Control Box trap was created back in the days when no means of editing the game other than scripting and modifying protos were available. Therefore, even despite the fact that as a script this trap is quite well executed, it has its drawbacks and is known to cause various problems with the game. I'd say we should remove it altogether and replace it with something else.

That's the idea. They might have to be equipped in order to pass; but are they equipable? Maybe a "check if they are in inventory" would suffice. Probably too much if they get modded to be used via a radial menu selection, like a wand or something. Any of these would work, I guess. Leave the trap at the base of the level 3 (down to 4) stairs.

A while back I proposed redoing that trap with the new means at our disposal. The general response I got from those I mentioned it to was not to mess with Liv's stuff, and that it would require too much effort since the current version more or less works.

As to why the dialog isn't firing, I did some tinkering with the general trap code recently that could have caused that. I will have to look into it.

@Spike: All the TZGY scarabs are on the 4th level. Putting the trap at the base of the stairs leading there from the third level would require the party to get through the trap before they could find a scarab.

Is this a bug or not?
I finished moathouse yeasterday and killed Lareth the Beautiful, after that I safely returned to Hommlet. There was no ambush about which I've heared. Why could this happen? Is that because I've already killed Zert in the inn, or there may be any other reason?

That would be why you didn't get ambushed.

Well, if you ask me, I don't think that Liv gives a dang anymore. This may sound rude and all, but it sure looks that way. So, if you can at least get her to communicate with you, maybe she'll tell you whether she gives us the permission like that or not. As far as I'm concerned, all attempts to communicate with Livonya failed, at least she never visited our boards even once anymore.

P.S. No, I'm not saying that this should be the reason we should do whatever we want with her mods etc. etc. What I'm trying to say is just my personal opinion about Liv's current stand on the problem of Co8 modding. Obviously, I'm not Liv, so this is just my opinion and I may be totally wrong.

Just an observer, and I'm not familiar with the extended world of modders & their (informal) code of ethics, but at some point, it seems to me, the copyright expires--and if the modder no longer shows an interest, after a period of time, especially if the situation behind-the-code (so to speak) has changed, there has to be at least some leeway for respectful tinkering. Obviously you all have a lot of respect for what Liv did, and who she was here, but she's moved on, she's not here anymore, and especially if the trap isn't working as she intended, you don't have to suffer the flaw's presence to justify using the good stuff she made for us.

    Just my $0.02.

which is to say, I agree. ;)

I agree that at this stage we shouldn't worry about sensible changes to Liv's stuff, so long as she retains credit for her work in the read-me. Still, if it were me, I'd want at least an email telling me what was going on. I wasn't here when Liv was most active, and I wasn't part of her circle. I also don't have her email. Would it be possible for someone who was close to her and has her current email to drop her a line, informing her that the current Co8 team would like to make some changes? If she doesn't respond, at least we tried.

No disrespect intended to anyone here; the changes should be made. Just trying to look at it from her point of view.

Re: 5.0.1 & 5.0.2 mods and fixes bug reports

I think the A.G. is on the right track here. To be honest, the impression I got with Livonya's departure was almost one of disdain with Co8. It was obvious she was offended by Drifter's Humble NPCs mod. She hasn't responded to any contact attempts that I know of, she never did supply us with her 2.0 mod like she said she was going to (just left us waiting around for it without any word that it wasn't forthcoming), and then ran off to play Ultima V: Lazarus, by Ted's account. That's not to say that we don't yet owe a huge debt of gratitude for what's she's done, or that she's not free do what she likes. But I think sending her permission-seeking e-mails and waiting around for replies that will never come is a fool's game.

One thing she did explicitly state was that Co8 was free to use her material, so in a way it's become part and parcel of Co8. Removing what essentially amounted to a poorly implimented and stupefying aspect of that material might almost be viewed more as a responsibility than an infringement, in that light.
