more widely used doesnt mean better as AOL has proven... besides how HARD it is to go to www.rarlab.com and download and install a simple program?

Rar can also be uncompressed by other programs, such as ace etc... And rar, while taking twice as long to compress, takes half the time to extract (which makes it nice for large scale distributing, along with the better size)... Again the only down side is that zip is far more widely spread, even to be integrated into winXP etc...
