Paladins are stale as hell. There's no variation. Plus, having a stick up my character's @$$ isn't really my idea of "entertaining" :) Plus, last time I checked, gameworld being b&w is not that fun either. TOEE is lacking enough storywise, paladins only make it worse.

Surely, paladins do nicely to bring down the late-game bosses, but tbh there's nothing too awesome they can do that a well-trained fighter with Owl's Wisdom buff can't against those enemies, except maybe Smite. But Smite can also come from a Smiting Rod, or from a few Cleric levels.

I just make +3 holy axiomatic frost shock weapons (they're also flaming as well, but that's not needed for the Balor) for everybody and just attack it.

more than the smites - that I love - the paladins have another thing that make trey veeery usefull against the balor: No fear!
Even with a character with high Wisdon, Owl's Wisdon, protection from Evil, under the effect of Inspire Courage AND with a paladin in the party, I never have being able to avoid the fear effect of the Balor! It's why I have decided to make a paladin's group first time...

    [edit]

    And well, they Smite...

Well, they smite but it's sort of a lame compensation for the things they give up. Also, don't high-level Clerics inspire Courage as well?

But really, there's other ways to avoid fear from Balor, my party with the aforementioned boosts didn't have much trouble. Plus, a Paladin with OK wisdom could be immune to fear, but not immune to charm

I don't know about clerics with Bardic Music, but maybe they really have some spell that helps with Fear - or even prevents it.

Ya talk about charmed armies, and Owl's Wisdon. As I mention, I have tried with a lot of diferent kinds of buffs without effect. And I don't think that some kind of army shall give ya any bonus against Fear effects - what is a mess....

And don't, paladins aren't immune to Charm spells, but they are much more resistant to it than any barbarian, fighter or ranger, becose a good Paladin will put some points in Wisdon (at least 14 if he is planing to be a pure Paladin) and something in Charisma, to help with Smithes, Lay on Hands and Turn Undead; Happens to Paladins that they have Divine Grace, that giv'em a bonus to all saves - including that ones made against Charm - equal to his Charisma Modiffer.

I agree, u lose a whole pile of quests when u got a paladin inthe posse. An NPC Paladin that could come along would be nice. as long as he/she didn't lose powers by being a retainer.
I've got a nice duo, monk/wizard and an elven bard enchanter. I think unless they have a nice possee along, the Balor will make short work of them.

lvl 10+ paladin in dwarven pl8 thats been enchanted +3, cause of the armours damage reduction, with sword of katara thats been enchanted with frost, and icy burst, with belt of strength+6, cloak of resistance, ring of fire resistance major, and a +3 tower shield with a fighter that has the belt of strength +6, frostband, fire resistance major ring, with a greater spell penetraiing wizard and a holy or lawful cleric. You will beat that ass.

Is there a way to remove the balor's fear in this game? I've tried the obvious remove fear and calm emotions but have never had those work.

Use greater heroism on your fighters, that solves alot of problems, break enchantment is also a neat spell i case they get other negative spells on them

Can't you cast remove fear before a battle and have it act as a preventative measure?

I mean, doesn't it give you a fear immunity for a period of time?

I think it works that way in RAW.

My PnP background is 2nd edition so I'm not deeply familiar with rules from 3e/3.5e even though I can get by. So it didn't occur to me that "Remove" Curse could be used preemptively. I past the Balor and Zuggy a few days ago (before seeing your post) so I haven't had a chance to test it. I'll try it next time I run into a monster that fears as it would be awesome to have that low a spell level be that useful in a boss fight.

I've also similarly never gotten delay poison to work though I read on these forums that it can be used preemptively as well so I'll try that out too.

I thought it was neutralize poison that works that way.

Neutralize poison works just fine reactively, as in you can use it after having been poisoned and it will remove the poison.

edit: Forgot to mention that the remove fear spell does not seem to work preemptively either. I tested it against the dragon fear from the white dragon at the end of the gnome tunnels.

edit 2: It's not actually dragon fear, it's the dragon casting the fear spell.

Remove Fear doesn't outright make you immune to fear, it only gives you a +4 morale saving bonus to it. Did you check the rolls history?
