Just wanted to check - has anyone got the Wild Empathy thing Druids and Rangers get at lvl 1 to actually work? The SRD suggests it is a deliberate action - how do u use it? Does it do anything?
I don't believe it's been implemented in ToEE. But yeah, it's a deliberate action on the part of the Ranger or Druid.
Kal - could u stomach its existance as a passive feat (albeit with floating text so u know when it works or fails) against, say, animals that weren't concealed? I'm not sure how we could do it as a deliberate act, but if it only fired against animals that the PC could see were there, it would be assumed by approaching the PC was deliberately making the check. Also, does it work against/with vermin?
Here's what the rules have to say: It's a conscious, deliberate action that takes a bit of time. Of course, depending on the animal, it might attack right away, preventing you from trying, or it might posture or keep its distance while it decides what to do, giving the ranger or druid time to do his thing. That said, in ToEE, animals pretty much attack on sight, so I don't really see allowing it to work passively as being a problem. Nope. Animals and animal-intelligence magical beasts only.
If they pass the d20 vs (lvl + cha modifier) result, then yeah, the animal remains mellow for the next hour or so.
Not rats? These are "vermin" as I understand the definition...now cockroaches, okay. But rats... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vermin
Spiders are (technically) vermin too, which is a pity because there will be more spiders in KotB than any druidly-type is gonna want to fight. Anyways, thats for later (to be bent when Kal ain't looking ) For now, Wild Empathy is DONE! Well, the script basics anyway Animals now have a chance, according to the rules, of not attacking a Druid or Ranger if they make their check. An example of a check being made, by a 4/4 Ranger / Druid with a Cha of 12:
And now an example of a check failing... note that the distance at which the check is made is dependant on Survival (ie the higher the survival score, the closer you have to be before the animal notices you), and while only Rangers and Druids have the chance to avoid being attacked, all characters get this survival-based element so Barbarians and people using Survival as a cross-class skill will get some benefit out of it. Edit: Look at that blood fly! But I will have to fix the typo in the .mes file. 2nd Edit: O and thanks to Blue and Spellslingerer for their input. I think I will do a li'l blog of the workings of this
Errr, never? There aren't that many rabid animals (other than the ones I introduced myself to the Moathouse Respawn - and I think the bears attack each other...) in ToEE. This is for KotB, where there will be lots of wilderness adventures, and where druids will have to watch their behaviour or risk 'falling'.
> Not rats? These are "vermin" as I understand the definition...now cockroaches, okay. But rats... In D&D 3.5, vermin refers to insects, arachnids and other non-intelligent, invertabrate creepy-crawlies, both giant and normal-sized. Rats are considered animals. @Ted: So a successful check only prevents the animal from attacking the ranger or druid? In PNP, a successful use of Animal Empathy can keep an animal from attacking the party, provided the party doesn't do anything to further enrage it, such as attacking it, much like a successful Diplomacy check can convince a group of orcs to leave the party alone, not just leave the PC with the skill off the menu.
It's a bit ahead of the curve and maybe off topic, but is there any chance we could see this develop into a way for rangers and druids to gain their animal companions based on this ability? I would love to see a druid have to encounter the animal gain the animal as a companion with their abilities rather than the curent version which is more like a summoning.
Unfortunately, the current version is how it works in the PNP rules. The druid or ranger goes out into the wild, performs a ritual and their companion appears.
