This place was started by Sol Invictus, Ausir and others. It seems they all faded away at some point.

So, who actually owns the site now? Who's in charge?

Also, speaking of the site, what exactly happened to the old site?
I vaguely recall someone mentioning that it was vulnerable to attacks or something like that. But that seems kind of strange - surely running a site can't be THAT hard? It's not like the net has collapsed around us... Who can fill me in on the details?

Well I really can't comment on the Co8 details, but I'll reply to two other points:

Actually as soon as it's some form of dynamic site (Forum, Wiki, anything that runs server-side code basically) it's *very* hard. The issue is that you have to maintain the site. That means you have to apply security patches on time and in general need to know what you are doing in terms of security setup and other things.

Actually it kinda has... There are a LOT of those virtual private servers around that some people without any form of administration knowledge ordered to run their board, game server or something like that. The issue is, they don't know anything about security patches and don't update/maintain their server. Once a security vulnerability for a server component is discovered (and it will. there have been a ton of vulnerability in the past), their server is fair game for script kiddies. There are exploit toolkits out there that just scan servers for known vulnerabilities and if the server hasn't been maintained for a while, they can exploit those vulnerabilities to gain access to the server. Once they've done that, they use the server to do whatever they want. That can range from running distributed denial of service attacks, distributing child pornography, running phishing sites, running spam servers, warez distribution, you name it...

To sum it up: You should only run a server if you know what you're doing.
You should only run a dynamic site if you have someone to administrate/maintain it for you or if you know what you're doing. And this also (or especially) applies if you use premade software packages like phpBB (you HAVE to maintain them!).
Otherwise, your site/server will pose a risk to the entire internet community.

Exceptions to the rule are basically managed servers (expensive) or just shared webspace with tight security or static HTML files.

    Storm

Sol still owns the site. Taluntain owns the server, afaik, and lets us know if we need to do anything to prevent attacks (such as upgrade our ftp programs, or whatever). Agetian does regular backups of the files and does a lot of the administrative stuff, which is minimal. (Except to him, since he has to do it :))

    Thats my understanding, anyway.
