Long ago I purchased ToEE when it first came out, but the game fell into disuse due to lack of support and bug fixes. However, I've been following Co8 and their work. In fact, I've re-installed the game and followed the sticky "Comprehensive ToEE Installation Instructions by Zebedee" in order to patch the game using the patch1, patch2, then up to Co8 5, and then the 5.0.1 All looked good. I created the characters. Bought items from Jade. Went straight to Turuko, and then straight to the moat at which point I entered my first combat on the way to the moat. ...that's when I realized something wasn't quite right. On most of the character radial were letters "j" or "+ j" or "s + l" etc....instead of what I would have expected to see such as coup, or 5-step, or Level 1, or Charge, etc... In fact, during the combat, sometimes similar letters scrolled during the combat..something like, "y + b" At first, I did not think I had done any of the steps wrong, but then I re-read some of the stickies, and realized I failed to do the following: ""Once you have created all your characters, quit the game start Front End again, and change the portrait pack to Play File. You may now play the game, and all your character portraits, even if they are from different packs, will be displayed as you play."" I had used portraits from different packs, but did not do that step. Is that why I am seeing the strange letters on the character radials? If that would not cause it, then what might be the issue and how should i attempt to remedy it? @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ Update: It looks as if missing that step was the culprit. I've reload using and used "Play File" and that resolved it......glad it wasn't something more serious such as start all over again from a clean install.
That happened to me when I first installed Co8 5. I had installed Patch 3 from before (wanted to finish my vanilla game I had going before starting with Co8), installed Patch 2 to override it then installed Co8 5. Turned out I had to install Patch 1, then patch 2. (thought I was special and that "THIS IS ONLY NECESSARY FOR SOME PEOPLEl" step in the sticky instructions didn't apply to me :blegh: )
