Someone over at the codex found this website. http://frua.rosedragon.org/modulelist/file.php One of the first modules is Temple of elemental evil. This has been done in the 'Unlimited adventures' Goldbox building set by SSI. If anybody has it maybe they can try this out. Apparently whoever made it used the module as there font.
There are quite a few mods out there for the FRUA, in fact loads of them. Interestingly all of the gold box series are available as free downloads now and can be located at: http://www.download-full-games.com missing manuals can be located at: http://www.replacementdocs.com/search.php However all of their graphic files are .dax and I have not located a program to open them yet.
I have already looked in to them. Those graphics cannot be used. Remember the horrible 2d SSI graphics, the DOS game graphics - a DOS window in Windows? I have a modded version of the SSI ToEE computer game, too. Let's just say that computer games have come a long way.
... agreed ... I downloaded several myself and it just doesn't have it anymore... however there is something to say for story lines and ideas... not plagarism
@whatsername74: It is an old computer game version of ToEE from back in the days of DOS computer games when Strategic Simulations Inc. made all of the AD&D type of Computer RPG games. Each character has a standard icon - a motionless 2d picture of a character. Plus, there is an alternative icon for 'action' during a round when it is a character's turn. When a character has their turn [fights, moves, or whatever], the standard icon is replaced momentarily with the action icon. Honestly, in its day, it was great to play for a DOS game with lots of text input to determine what the player wants to do for their turn. However, now, it's kind of stupid type of funny to look at and laughable to watch compared to more modern computer games.
Here is a old version of the SSI game .... Dungeon Hack ..... yeah the games have come a long way since back then. Of course I can remember the first computer I ever used was a Commodore Vic-20 LOL.
Man...now you're bringing back memories.... howabout the old Apple 2c or better yet the older ?10"? floppy drives that ran on a unix base o.p.s.
Actually I still have a box of reel to reel tapes. I know they probably should go to the Smithsonian now LOL :yikes:
I had a VIC-20. All I can remember is the cassette drive it came with, and spending hours playing Lunar Lander on it. I also bought an Apple IIc, at least half of my reason for doing so was so I could play Archon. !
You have 3 floppy disks and install the game from three floppy disks. Then, you have to boot to DOS and run the game from the C: drive. You need the rules book that came with the game to know what to determine for the "word" code to continue playing the game.
I used to play Archon all the time on my C64. We also had it on the Apples at elementary school. Someone managed to convince the teachers it was a variant of chess.
That's funny. In 6th grade, my friend and I used to get pulled out for computer enrichment, which basically meant playing space invaders for 42 minutes (he knew more about computers than the teachers, but I still don't know why they let us do that).
I was in our town's gifted program, which meant we got to have computers in the classroom. I think folks tried to install other games on there, like Spy vs. Spy, but the teachers were wise to that. But with Archon the teachers saw what looked like a chessboard and didn't both investigating further. Of course, we also played the crap out the Carmen Sandiego series and actual chess (Chessmaster was the program of choice for the school) and Oregon Trail and some monster-making lab program that was supposed to be educational, but I'm not sure in what way it actually was.
