Here's how i do colour changes usually: the curves adjustment layer.

this can be applied for overall colour castes, as well as doing a 'night' version of a particular day-map.

Like any adjustment layer, a curves layer can be masked off, in order to affect only part of the image - to mask off areas, select the layer and paint black areas in it: the white areas are the areas you will be adjusting.

Anyways, for those new to this here is where you find a curves adjustment layer (this is DIFFERENT from going to image - adjust: that alters the current layer, this creates a new layer that alters the layers below it, and can be masked/switched on and off etc)

For the purposes of this tutorial im using one of the images from the raider camp map (an obsolete one anyway :p ). This is what you should see when you create a curves adjustment layer

By clicking on the little graph thingy in the curves window you create a point, which can be dragged, to affect the levels of a particular colour. By dragging the middle of the curve you affect the midtones of the image - since we are currently in RGB mode, by dragging it upwards, all the midtone colours become brighter.

Its also possible to move the ends of the line around, though this is less useful to begin with, but have a play with it anyway :)

By dragging the midtones down, the mid levels become darker - note that the brightest points are still just as bright, because we havent moved the right-topmost part of the line.

here's where the fun begins - you can change your mode to affect only one colour channel at a time:

if you select an individual channel and change the graph you increase/decrease the amount of that colour:

if you then decrease the other two channels, you further shift the image towards that colour-caste:

you can also add more than one point - for example - a nice, quick 'torchlight' effect is to increase the blues in the shadows, but make the highlights more yellow.
