Can someone please help me understand how this works?

I have a halfing armed with a sling. I am flanking the bugbear. But still no sneak attack. When I switch to short sword... I sneak attack. Is this a bug?

Also the manual talks about sneak attacks occuring when the opponent does not have a dexterity bonus. When does this occur.

ie. If my fighter is engaging the bugbear. And my theif is standing 15 feet behind the fighter, does the bugbear get his dexterity bonus? Or does my thief have to be 90 degress around the side? 180 degrees?

I know flatfooted... but what about in direct combat.

    Thanks!

Rogues are able to get a sneak attack when flanking, but in order to flank, you have to be engaged in melee combat, so no ranged weapons. The only ways to get a sneak with a ranged weapon is to hit them when flatfootted or immobilized (i.e., webbed, prone, etc.). Flanking involves having another party member (with a melee weapon?) on the opposite side of the enemy. You have a little leeway, but not a whole lot. Worse, if two guys are flanking an enemy and a third comes in at a 90 degree angle from both of them, the first two get a flanking bonus, but the third guy won't. Move a fourth guy opposite him, and all four will get flanks. Hope that helps.
