Why did you all implement this fight after the moathouse for good parties that killed Lareth? I mean how am I suppose to fight an army of these enemies right after clearing out the moathouse? I need to rest inside of the moathouse and pray for no random encounter and then fight through raging gnolls, that barbarian guy, and brigands, Zurko, and that other guy? This seems very tough for a level 3/4 party to handle that is likely encumbered, hurt, and has no spells. Any suggestions on getting through.

Well it seems they are weak enough they drop fast, but why add the gnolls? They hit like trucks!

I defeated them, but I still feel this battle should have had less gnolls.

Yeah it's tough, but it's those surprise fights where you survive by the skin of your teeth that are the memorable ones. I find you mostly charm Kobort and he does the work for you.

It was added because they were NPCs who had an agenda, but players tended to avoid them once they realised they were just going to turn on you later. This let them play out their agenda with just a little impact. You can always recruit any one or more of them, then it doesn't happen.

This is one of my favorite parts of the game! You get through the fight with Lareth's crew, bloodied but rich, then the terrifying shock of the creepy-crawlies waiting for you in the corridor, and just when you think you are finally safe- Wham!!! Even though I usually have to reload and replay the whole sequence from the beginning at least three times to keep everyone alive- or perhaps because of this- the feeling of satisfaction when the last enemy falls is almost indescribable. It's so rewarding you don't even mind having to come back from Homlett to pick up the loot you didn't have the space to carry on the first trip. ;)

As I recall, you can obtain at least one chest to throw things in by then, so you shouldn't have to worry about making two trips...

Certainly one of the harder fights, made all the better with the cunning reuse of voiced speech. There is nothing stopping you from backtracking to the moathouse spider tower to rest in if random fights inside are too tough.

I thought they nabbed you in the courtyard if you went out that way?

They do? To be fair it has been a very long time since I last played through ToEE.

Saving your game before risking a mid-dungeon camp is a thing though, it's not impossible to avoid a random encounter, and you just have to reload if one occurs.

Definitely one of my favourite fights in the game. For replay value, 'how bashed up can I be after Lareth, and still take on Zert and Co.?' is a very interesting question to answer.

If you find the miniature chest but don't return to Hommlet to identify it, then the chest won't help you much.

The Zurko ambush will occur whichever way you exit the Moathouse.

I tend to give my party an extraplanar chest in the Shop Map. Helps me avoid the inconvenience of managing my loot without the chest.

I think I memorize an Identify spell for that specific purpose before I try the Moathouse (of course, my Wizard is a multi-class Fighter too).

And before I forget, it's "Toruko", not Zurko...

I strongly suspect "Zurko" is meant to represent Zert, Turuko, and Kobort.
