My first test game start up of the beta I was in this map called `the unknown place` that let me buy some equipment. But now I just go straight into the adventure unequipped. how do I make sure I go into the unknown place to prepare myself thanks
I'm starting my games with 500 gold but they have nothing. In the last mod I thought I remembered a caravan you help and you can buy from them after. Not a big deal, I just thought to that first time I played the beta I was in a set of small rooms and then a portal you go through when your done picking cloths, armor and weapons to start your adventure.
You should always start in the shop map in v5.5.0 beta. Did you make any custom modifications to the module? - Agetian
In that case, it sounds like something was not installed properly or something like that. Consider reactivating the module - to do that, click "Temple of Elemental Evil" in the modules list in TFE-X and click "Activate", then, once it's active, click "Circle of Eight Modpack 5.5.0 BETA" in the modules list in TFE-X and click "Activate" again. After Co8 5.5.0b is activated again, try launching the game again. Your created players and saved games will not be lost in the process. - Agetian
Well thats the odd thing about this. I havn't 'played the beta' yet persay, but I did a test start and the first time I was in this area and now I can't get back to it now that I have a real party ready. I will try your idea, sounds like it could work. _____ Tried it- WORKED! THANKS!
I can never seem to have a game or program without errors and crashes and problems. I am in the shop area and I saved the game there as 'The shop area' So I go to load the game and it crashes! of course! No clear reason given, no error message. Just brings me back to Windows and the program is closed every time.
Thats been reported elsewhere. Persnoally I had it happen to me - it stopped when I started Running as Administrator. Its also been reported in XP. Don't save on the shopmap, I guess
running 5.5.0 beta under win2k i've been able to pretty consistently cause a ctd from the shopmap screen, whether saving, loading, or beginning the adventure from there the deciding factor seems to be having bought more than one stack of the same item for the same character, namely arrows or potions avoiding stacked items seemed to prevent the ctd and corrupted saves from this map
Maybe thats what caused it, because I did stack two quivers of arrows just before I saved. Any rate I reselected my party and it let me save there before buying last night. I just won't save again till I'm out of there. ShiningTed, I was just wondering what some of your favorite characters are that you created? Did you have any halfling wizards or anything interesting that turned out good that you'd share? Looking forward to delving into this great game again! Thanks.
That stacking thing is another common problem - it happened on the shopmap of KotB too. Darned if I know what it is  My favourite characters? Ugh! Boring, generic folks they are... the occasional elven rogue, but generally my parties are entirely human, I just can't go past that extra feat. I always want at least 17 in the main stat, but can live with lower rolls in the others (though only one <10, if any). Its more challenging that way. I use lots of archers (rogues and rangers are almost always arhery specialists, rarely 2wf). I'll have a paladin if I am playing a good party: I don't play evil parties (except for testing) but I go the tree-hugger hippy party sometimes. Never have got to the end with one of those parties. Clerics have to have Improved Turning, wizards / sorcerers have to be good with a bow as well. I make the face character first, then go by rolls, so if I get good rolls for certain classes I might forget to make a cleric. And a wizard. And a fighter. But mostly I like to use small numbers of PCs and lots of NPCs. They aren't optimal (nothing about how I play is ) but I find they add to the experience.
I have seen the shop map save crash, but I have never seen stacking problems on the shop map or in the game itself. I have started 5 games with the new 5.5 and both times have emptied the shop of arrows and bolts. One player has stacked all the arrows and another all of the bolts each time and I've never seen a crash. Using XP sp2. Never touched the sling bullets though.
Interesting reports on the stacking/save issues, both for and against. I don't know there's much we can do about it though, other than make ammo unavailable, and I'm sure nobody wants that. It kind of sucks though, because the shopmap is meant to be rested and saved on - that's why the cozy fire and the beds and all that. I like this approach - imperefect characters with all their flaws fleshing out your ranks. I do it this way too (whenever I actually play the game anymore, which is not often ), but with more PCs to start and then replacing them with NPCs when/if they die. I don't accept the ressurection thing. Permanent life and death consequences make everything much more interesting. What limited story there is in ToEE can be helped along by providing your own personal drama. Your main tank is killed in a battle with the Moathouse bandits (or your wizard eviscerated by the bandit leader, as usual ); what do you do? The only fellow avaialble for hire at the moment is Spugnoir, so suddenly you find your tactical focus unexpectedly changing from melee-oriented to magic-oriented on the fly and you have to make it work somehow. That's pretty good stuff, imo.
