Ever log onto the site wondering what technical issues might be on krunch's mind at the moment, and then tear your hair out in frustration after being unable to locate the pertinent threads? No?

Well no matter: now the Captain's various technical ruminations can all be found in one stickied thread. Welcome to The Kaptain's Korner!

From AntiVirus program removal tips to operating system support status updates, it can all be found here. Check back frequently to:

    - Get the latest scoop on Windows OSs and associated service packs

    - Discover the best ways to remove and reinstall ToEE -- as often as you like!

    - Learn the Kaptain's opinions on various ToEE bugs and startup issues

    - Maybe even get some one-on-one time with the Kaptain himself!

If you need step-by-step instructions on cleaning your CDs, configuring that pesky anti-spyware software, or checking to see if your video drivers are up to date, post here and the Kaptain just might lend you a hand.

Just remember - like with all other Co8 personnel, krunch sometimes has RL issues to deal with, so he is not at your beck and call 24 hours a day. And of course, only krunch himself will decide if he actually wants to post here.

But enough delays and disclaimers. Let's jump right into the technical fun! The Kaptain's Corner is on the air!

Congradulatios! Now you can enjoy this great game. I agree your fix should be saved for posterity, but instead of stickied i think it should be posted in Common Issues and solutions.

interesting, and if you're using the latest patch by Ted, its out of date (might be cos of the source document you got it from).
It'd be helpful to those who don't know how to look at the decriptions.mes. I was almost going to say what a waste of time and then remembered that I was a Newbie at one time to and something like this would've been a great help, so good work, needs updating.

Some of those items REQUIRE either Cujo V1 or Teds mod... so to any of you who want to console in items on that list with number between 4400 - 4999 (except 4500, I think thats in Livs) and 6318 - 6999 then you'll NEED Teds latest patch, just a word of warning

Test the RAM installed in your computer.

    ****************************************

Download the pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip) file for memtest86.

    The file is named memtest86+-1.70.iso.zip.
    * You will need to unzip the file (extract the content of the zip file) to your hard drive.

Burn a CDR using "write disk from ISO file.." or similar named option in your CD writing software. When done, boot the computer using the newly made bootable CD disk you make and run memory tests. This will tell you if the RAM memory installed in your computer has problems or not.

    Krunch's ToEE Hardware Recommendations (Final)

This thread contains information about hardware recommendations for ToEE written by Krunch.

ToEE game CTD or computer crash notes (more)

feeling overwhelmed and scratching your head?..then, read these steps.

Try these steps one at a time to attempt to fix your woes.

    > 1. clean any dirty CD disks and reinstall the ToEE game (and ToEEFE if used) - do a complete game uninstall; delete all remaining game folders; reboot the computer; after deletions and reboot, do a game install from scratch
    > 2. clean your Windows (reboot only as needed)
    (2.1.) delete temp/cache files in Windows and Internet Explorer;
    (2.2.) remove viruses and spyware [low on cash?..get a free version and update after installing - see *, **, *** below];
    (2.3.) defragment Windows files
    * (free version of antispyware): [use both] "Ad-Aware SE Personal" and "Spybot - Search & Destroy"
** (free version of antivirus): [use just one] "Antivir" or "AVG" or "Avast!" [note1: I list 3 here from the least to the most consuming of resources; note2: I personally dont care for avast as it is a total resource hog; note3: they make it so you have to purposefully dig and look around a lot on their site for their avast free version]
*** (which free antivirus?) my suggested opinions are "Antivir" = PC under 1 GigaHertz with any RAM; "AVG" = PC over 1 GigaHertz with 256 MB RAM (minimum); "Avast!" = PC over 2 GigaHertz with 512 MB RAM (minimum) [note: these suggestions consider other software being installed and used, not just the CPU and RAM in the PC to run an antivirus program]
    > 3. update your Windows drivers for your hardware [use windowsupdate.microsoft.com for their certified drivers and, then, try the manufacturer websites for their certified drivers]
    > 4. undo any overclocking or optimized settings you made in the BIOS and also turn off [disable] memory BIOS caching and video BIOS caching (when done, save changes and exit)
    > 5. run free hardware testing programs you can download and install to run extended tests to report any bad or "flakey" problematic hardware [you can uninstall any trial versions when done]
    > 6. save data and files you want to keep to CD or DVD disks or an external USB drive [dont forget My Documents and your personal folders; dont forget any outlook PST files or outlook express IDX files you use; and dont forget Internet Explorer favorites when saving data]; reinstall Windows from scratch [select "NEW INSTALLATION" and have it delete everything when reinstalling Windows...select reformat if the option is given]

Finally, you can browse this entire thread (hardware recommendations for ToEE) and read for further information and more detail, but very little concerning step 6.

In addition to installing an antivirus program, I also refer to antivirus scanning executables [just run executable files]. Read this post.

    Good luck!..

How To" do a clean from scratch install of Windows XP.

    ****************************************

    1. Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive and restart the computer.

    2. At the Welcome to Setup page, press ENTER.

    3. Press the F8 key to accept the Windows XP Licensing Agreement.

    4. If you are prompted to repair an install, press the ESC key to bypass doing a repair.
    * A repair serves a particular function, but not reinstalling XP.

    5. DELETE ALL OF THE PARTITIONS !!!
    * All the existing partitions and the unpartitioned spaces are listed for each physical hard disk. Use the ARROW keys to select one partition at a time. Press D to delete an existing partition. Then, press L (or press ENTER, and then press L if it is the System partition) to confirm that you want to delete the partition. Repeat this step for each of the existing partitions that you want to delete for the new partition. When all the partitions are deleted, select the entire remaining unpartitioned space [will be one item listed], and then press C to create the new partition.

    6. Once the entire partition is selected, press the ENTER key to create the partition with the maximum size.

    7. When prompted, use the ARROW keys to select the one single partition you just made and press the ENTER key.

    8. Select the format option that you want to use for the partition, and then press the ENTER key.
    • Format the partition by using the NTFS file system <--- Use this option.

    9. After the Windows Setup program formats the partition, follow the instructions that appear on the screen to continue, including the reboots.
    * Depending on the computer and what's in it, that should take between 1 and 2 hours.

And, don't forget to make sure you have your valid Windows XP serial number or CD key.

Is this better than using a program like ccleaner? Or does it reach parts other programs cannot reach? :)

Re: do a standard windows cleanup

    index.dat is cleaned.

if program is open, pop-up warning offering the choice to skip, cancel or continue (after shutting down the program or it pops up again)

    no malware

back-up registry which works (honest guv) if something screws up - just save before cleaning.

The registry cleaning stuff is optional anyways - you can just go in and clean the temp files without playing about with anything else.

Just a thought in any case.

my experience with Windows Vista and ToEE

    ****************************************

I have Windows Vista on a laptop.
    - Windows Vista Home Premium, version 6.0.6000 build 6000

fyi - I had to install the Bink RAD Video on my laptop with Vista. (not optional)

    download The RAD Video Tools
Notice it does not have Vista listed, but it works on Vista. Well, it worked for the Vista on my computer.

    Video Card and Driver
    ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 (laptop)
    ATI Radeon Xpress 8.332.0.0

information regarding Vista on my computer and the ToEE game
    Notes
    - disabled Vista UAC
    - installed ToEE components using 'Run as administrator..'
    - had to install Atari patch1 & patch2

    Extra Notes
    - I did not download and did not install any driver updates. (no Vista updates)
    - I did not set any compatibility mode for launching or running the game.
    - Windows Vista comes with dotNET 3; I did not install any dotNET versions.
    - Bink RAD Video must be installed for Vista to handle BIK video files.
    - I did not change any game options for particles, mouse acceleration, etc; I only made personal preference changes in the game options - when to end a turn, sound levels, etc.
    - Even though the video screen is wide and is displayed at 1280x800x32 at 60 Hz, the ToEE game options lists the video at 800x600x32 at 60 Hz and the ToEE game completely accepts the ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 adapter.
    - I did not change any of the ATI Control Panel settings.
