To put it all in perspective - ENGLAND won the last world cup (which was a disgrace that any northern hemisphere team should win). ITALY and JAPAN would, I think it is fair to say, be considered slightly stronger rugby nations than the US. So the US is doing quite well to keep their game against the former world champs competitive, while France were upset by Argentina. (And it's being hosted in France. So ha ha ha). At least Italy got on the board this time - I was at the last world cup, saw the Italy - NZ match in Melbourne, and for memory it was 70-nil or so.
The Aussie, Japan game was pretty boring. The Australians dominated so much - it was just Japan kick off, Wallabies get the ball, Wallabies score, rince and repeat. I thought the US played pretty well and England fucked up quite a bit - I was expecting th US to get quite a stomping. I was kinda expecting the French to be more dominant of the Pumas but was pleasantly suprised. I only managed to see 40mins of the ABs/Italy game as I had to drop mum off at the airport but it wasn't the most exciting game from what I saw of it. Just looking at the pools, you can pretty much guarantee South Africa, Australia and New Zealand a place in the 1/4 finals. Pool D is a little harder for me to pick altho I'm not expecting Georgia and Namibia to do particularly well.
The US has a National Rugby team? And they were good enough to make the World Cup this year? That's pretty amazing considering 99% of the US population could not tell you the differences between rugby and, say, lacrosse.

Yeah, Rugby doesn't get much press here in the US. I don't think a rugby match has ever been televised in the history of the US. Unfortunate. But it is pretty wide-spread. Most universities have rugby teams and there are a multitude of Men's rugby clubs. I played rugby myself here in Texas for a few years back in '95 to '97. I wish I could watch the Rugby World Cup. :sadblinky
I wondered how long it'd take you to get on this thread, Zulu. I thought of you right away when I saw it. Cujo- What was the deal with the reporter getting beat up on camera while filing a report on the Cup? Have you heard anything about that? I saw a 20 sec. clip on headline news this morning, but it was not very detailed. It figures that that would be the only thing that gets any coverage in America from the whole Cup.
Sorry. Went outta town to watch my Goddaughter's gymnastics competition. Was too tired to get online last night. She got four medals and her team won the Overall. She's 9.
Well I saw a story on a reporter getting beat up while filiing a story about the Brisane Broncos and the Melborne Storm which is Rugby League (the world cup is Rugby Union) I didn't see anything other than that. [EDIT] Full story on that one... http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/articles/2007/09/10/1189276579778.html
Makes sense to me. Not only do we not cover the Cup, but we misrepresent anything having to do with rugby as being Cup-related.
I think that lacrosse has very few elements of baseball in it if any at all. It's more or less soccer with sticks. And American Football is the greatest sport, Cujo, don't be thick.
Here is the footage/story on the reporter getting bashed if your interested. http://www.breitbart.tv/?p=5416 I'm not going to bite on that Grid Iron "best sport ever" line.
