Modpack Update: Verbobonc and Other Concerns

    Dateline April 23, 2009, USA

There have been a lot of posts recently by people with concerns over problems encountered in Verbobonc, such as missing merchants, problem dialogues, trouble getting there, etc. Here's an update on what's going on development-wise with Verbobonc:

Factoid: Verbobonc is being overhauled for the next release. You needn't worry that these problems will never be addressed.

Factoid: There are known problems with getting the location of Verbobonc from the prisoners in the temple. This is going to change in the next release, which will hopefully contain the reorganized 'Tales of the Wild Coast' expansion in which most of our major custom content will be moved to the end of the game. So starting with the next release, you won't get the location of Verbobonc from the prisoners anyway.

Factoid: The merchant prisoners in the temple won't be going to Verbobonc in the next release, so you needn't worry that they're not appearing there properly now. There will be other merchants in Verbobonc.

Factoid: Verbobonc never appears as an icon on the worldmap and never will. Verbobonc is outside the geographical boundaries of the world map, so the only way to get there, once you've learned of its location, is by selecting the name from the list on the right.

Factoid: The overhauled Verbobonc will be much larger and will theoretically represent the 'Civic Center' section of the city. It will be among the largest maps in the game - not as large as Hommlet but equal to the largest temple maps and larger than Hickory Branch.

Factoid: People will walk the streets of Verbobonc. Not just guards.

Factoid: The gnomes will be getting new digs. The dungeons will stay the same, but they'll actually have two levels of living quarters in their living quarters before you get to the dungeons.

Factoid: The Lord Mayor will have a new hall. His old one will still be his private office in the much larger whole.

Factoid: There will be a separate map for the Temple of Hextor, which will now be situated in old burned out church instead of a warehouse.

Factoid: The overhauled Verbobonc will contain the Arena of Heroes, a remarkably as-yet-unused original Troika map of a coliseum in which the party will fight various battles based on plots originally designed by Morpheus and followed up by Sitra Achara.

Here's an image of a section of the new Verbobonc in its current development state. Stay tuned for more updates.

    Mod Performance

    Dateline June 24, 2009, USA

Below is a neat little interactive chart from ModDB showing the relative performance of the Co8 modpack since its release. If you're interested in seeing how the mod is doing, check back here regularly because the stats are updated daily. (Some of the stats are a little wacky though. For example, there have apparently been far more hits in the last three months than during the entire lifespan of the mod. But it's still kind of interesting.) Enjoy!

Tales of the Wild Coast: What's It All Mean?

    Dateline July 2, 2009, USA

Okay, time to set the record straight on just exactly what the Tales of the Wild Coast expansion is.

The goals of the TotWC expansion are three-fold:

    1. To add new content (areas, quests, items, spells, characters, etc.) to the game
    2. To separate the majority of new Co8 content (in terms of actual adventures and areas, etc.) from vanilla ToEE content by moving the Co8 content to the end of the game, where it shall be called Tales of the Wild Coast
    3. To restore ToEE to something much closer to its original balance
    What new content?

Plenty that you're already familiar with, such as the Moathouse Respawn, the Orc cave prequel, and Hickory Branch 2.0, but also new stuff you haven't seen, such as the much larger Verbobonc 2.0 and the Arena of Heroes mod. There will also be new quests, new figures of interest, and new battles to enjoy.

But those old Co8 mods aren't designed for level 10+ adventures! The mod is doomed!

Don't worry, all the custom expansion content is being redesigned for high level parties.

What about the revenge encounter and the Moathouse ambush?

They'll remain where they are. They are in the relative minority of Co8 material that is vanilla story-dependant, so they have to stay. Hopefully two additional battles won't skew the balance too much. At least it will be nowhere near the level of three additional major new areas.

This is a fool's errand! There's no way the balance will be restored.

With the new content relocated to later in the game, the balance will fall back to whatever it was before. The only other factors that may impact it will be hyper-treasure and the CR/XP overhaul done by Kalshane, but so be it. The proto overhaul brought ToEE much, much closer to RAW, and any innapropriate hyper-treasure left lying around in the early levels will be dealt with.

    What about Welkwood Bog?

Welkwood Bog was intended to serve as an alternative to the early game woes of Hommlet fed-exing. It will remain as such, with disclaimers advising players that if you do Welkwood Bog and Hommlet fed-exing, you'll have an early surplus of XP.

What's the big idea with separating vanilla and Co8 content anyway?

It creates a clean distinction. Some players don't care for custom Co8 content, and with it all moved to the end of the game, they'll be free not to play it if they wish.

What do you mean by "end of the game?" There's no way you can put that stuff at the end of the game.

Yes we can. We will simply turn off the scripts that cause the endslides to fire after Zuggtmoy is killed or banished. At that point instead, you'll be given the option to continue adventuring or to call it quits.

    Continue adventuring how? Where? Why?

New challenges will await parties throughout the region, with your new base of operations becoming the city of Verbobonc. Just because the temple is destroyed doesn't mean that everyone lives happily ever after. Dangers lurk everywhere, and the Lord Viscount of Verbobonc thinks you're the perfect group to deal with them.

Great. He'll just say "go to Hickory Branch." "Go to the Moathouse."

He'll say much more than that. Hickory Branch, for example, will have an actual story attached to it. And the intrigue within Verbobonc itself is being more broadly developed. And there will be new matters to attend to as well.

ToEE wasn't designed for adventuring beyond level 10! The mod is doomed!

You're right: vanilla ToEE wasn't designed for that. The exapansion, on the other hand, will be what it will be. The level progressions are RAW; the content is new; the intangibles to support higher level adventures - more powerful items, higher level spells, higher level feats and skills - are in place. Relax and let it happen.

What other changes are in store?

Ted's Humble NPCs tweaks, which will prevent players from taking items from NPCs that they would actually want to keep while still allowing you access to their mundane possessions and stopping them from looting independantly. This will become the standard for NPC interaction and will hopefully render other alternatives (or lack of alternatives) obsolete. Also, there will be greater consequences and repercussions for acting the fool and wantonly killing innocents.

Fantastic! I can't wait to try that out!

Have at it, but be warned: the idea is to discourage you from behaving that way, which in turn reflects the realities of doing so in a semi-civilized society. Once you head down that road, the problem will not go away easily. Or at all.

Bollocks! I want challenging battles without consequences!

Sorry. If all you want to do is fight the Verbobonc regional guard all day, go ahead and slaughter peasants and such. You won't have time for anything else.

    Bah! I'll defeat them easily!

    Good luck.

When will this mysterious expansion be released?

In the next modpack, version 6.0.0. There is no release date estimate for it at this time, but it will come one day. A lot of work remains to be done, with not as much resources available as we'd always like. But it's out there.

    How do I learn more?

To ask your own questions or discuss the TotWC expansion in greater detail, see the corresponding sticky thread in the Temple of Elemental Evil forum.

The Co8 Modpack: New Release Template

    Dateline July 19, 2009, USA

Given the recent trend in user feedback, there's going to be a revision in the method of releasing upcoming Co8 modpacks. Instead of waiting a year and a half for one giant monolithic release, it will come in installments. These installments wil not be as frequent nor fragmentary as the old CMF releases used to be, but they will be more significant.

The following template will be for used for projected releases through the entire arc of the current Tales of the Wild Coast benchmark:

    Co8 Modpack Version 5.6.0 BETA

    Focus: bugfixes and optimization
    Release estimate: August 2009
Detail: 5.6.0 will fix most of the bugs reported in 5.5.0, optimize gameplay, and hopefully eliminate issues like the jerkstop phenomenon by overhauling and streamlining a great many aspects of the game mechanic (e.g. tweaking general sectoring and mobile objects, redoing waypoints, eliminating unnecessary scripting and spawning, etc.). 5.6.0 will also tweak certain cosmetic issues like contradictory NPC attire and underpopulated towns (both started in 5.5.0), and will address various Co8-modded trouble areas such as hyper-treasure and incomplete quest lines, etc. It will also see the temporary removal of projected TotWC custom material (Moathouse Respawn, Verbobonc, Hickory Branch) from their current locations and scenarios in order to restore the vanilla balance of the game as much as possible and prepare for TotWC. Much of the objective of this release will be to gauge the effect that the removal of this custom content has on the game, with the goal being to restore balance in vanilla content across a level range of approximately 1 - 10.

    Co8 Modpack Version 5.7.0 BETA

    Focus: Welkwood Bog
    Release estimate: December 2009
Detail: 5.7.0 will be intended primarily to implement Welkwood Bog into the modpack, with it serving as an alternative to the Hommlet fedexing chapter of the game. The maps for Welkwood are already done. What remains is to script what happens there.

    Co8 Modpack Version 5.8.0 BETA

Focus: Tales of the Wild Coast
    Release estimate: April 2010
Detail: 5.8.0 will be intended primarily to implement the Tales of the Wild Coast material into the game as described in the post above. The new maps for TotWC are already done, as is much of the scripting. What remains is to rebalance, rewrite, script, and tweak where necessary, and to integrate successfully into the whole.

    Co8 Modpack Version 5.9.0 BETA

    Focus: bugfixes and optimization
    Release estimate: August 2010
Detail: 5.9.0 will be intended primarily as a final bugfix and optimization sweep of the preceding two releases.

    Co8 Modpack Version 6.0.0 FINAL

    Focus: final tweaks and consolidation
    Release estimate: December 2010
Detail: 6.0.0 will be the release where it all comes together.

Note that these release estimates are just that - estimates. There's no way we can know for sure when all this will happen, but I don't believe the projections are unreasonable. And more details will emerge on the latter releases as their release dates get closer.

Each release will be followed by an official bug-reporting thread as was seen with 5.5.0. While 5.7 and 5.8 may include some bugfixes, the thrust will be to implement their respective material, not fix bugs. The larger bugfixing effort will occur in 5.9.

Also, there may be additional modded content included along the way in any or all of these releases - e.g., Sitra Achara's Temple and Traders mods, Ranth's mod if it is ever integrated, etc. I have no way of 'previsioning' these elements, ha-ha. This is a general template.

As always, stay tuned for more news, and feel free to discuss these topics in the TotWC Discussion thread in the ToEE forum.

    Attack of the Inevitable Delays

    Dateline August 29, 2009, USA

This should surprise no one, but it looks as though there's very little chance that Co8 5.6.0 will be released tomorrow (8/30). Hopefully the delay won't be more than a couple days, which means it will probably be well over a couple days. Many apologies.

    Welkwood Bog, TotWC, Co8 5.6.2, and Co8 5.7

    Dateline October 14, 2009, USA

Four topics in one news post? It's crazy! ;)

    Welkwood Bog

Welkwood Bog is on indefinite hiatus and will not be appearing as planned in Co8 5.7, (tentatively scheduled for release in December 2009). I'm not sure when or if Welkwood Bog will ever be done, and the dialog links to it will probably be removed in the next release (see below), but curious or nostalgic players will still be able to go to the maps and wander around by typing

    Code:
    game.areas[7] = 1
into the game console. This will place Welkwood Bog on your world map.

    Tales of the Wild Coast

TotWC has also seen absolutely no advancement since the release of Co8 5.6 and will not be appearing in Co8 5.7 in December. To see the new Civic Center of Verbobonc maps in their entirety though, type

    Code:
    game.areas[14] = 1
into the game console. This will place Verbobonc on your world map.

Hickory Branch, also currently not active in the latest release, can still be accessed by typing

    Code:
    game.areas[9] = 1
into the game console. This will place Hickory Branch on your world map. Go there and dream of orcs. :punch:

    Co8 5.7.0

While this upcoming release will not feature Welkwood Bog or Tales of the Wild Coast, it may still have some neat things up its sleeve that will make playing through again a bit of a 'new' experience. It's still tentatively scheduled for release in December, but subject to change.

    Co8 5.6.2

This version of the Co8 5.6 series will be released fairly soon, and it will take the form of a full modpack as opposed to a patch. This is because some of the bugs associated with 5.6 require more than just patching or overriding to fix. So while it may be confusing that 5.6.0 was a full modpack, 5.6.1 was a patch, and 5.6.2 will be a full modpack again, we'll all be better off for it. Stay tuned for more information reagrding this release.

Coming Soon: Circle of Eight Modpack 5.6.2

    Dateline November 4, 2009, USA

So what the hell is Co8 5.6.2 anyway?

Co8 5.6.2 will be a full stand-alone module as opposed to a patch or add-on module, and it will feature all the content of 5.6.0 and the 5.6.1 patch, as well as a variety of new elements that consist mainly of additional bugfixes. 5.6.2 is being released as a full module because there were problems with 5.6.0 that could not be addressed simply by patching.

5.6.2 will probably be the last entry in the 5.6 series, with work focusing on 5.7 to follow.

    What's new for 5.6.2?

    • Fixed masterwork inventory respawns!
    • No more projectile or giant combat problems in Emridy Meadows!
    • A return to the original Jayfie and Corl routines!
    • Further efforts to stabilize the Hommlet exterior map by removing superfluous butterfly and bug animations that may tax lower end systems and lead to jerkstop!
    • A crash-free shopmap!
    • Restored Tolub brawl functionality in Nulb!
    • No more uber-high-level party waiting around in Nulb to give away prime gear and XP!
    • No more Queen Tarah story!
    • Fixed cabinet maker inventory in Hommlet!
    • Fully-armed bugbears in the Moathouse!
    • No more failed deals with Tarim for his special buddy's gear (these wil be gone until such time as they can be fixed properly)!
    • The removal of NPC dialog flags until such time as they can be implemented more comprehensively!
    • Other stuff!
    What's not fixed in 5.6.2?

    • Charging crossbowmen (still have no idea why they're doing that).
    When will 5.6.2 be available?

    • Soon!
Can I use old saves with 5.6.2?

    • No, you'll have to start a new game.
    How do I learn more?

    • Stay tuned to the news thread!

    Release Update

    Dateline November 27, 2009, USA

    Where is my Co8 5.6.2?

There's been a change of plans: it's already late November, with Co8 5.7 scheduled for release in late December, so there will be no 5.6.2 anymore. There will instead be 5.7.0, which will essentially be what 5.6.2 was going to be - everything from 5.6.0 and 5.6.1, as well as all the cumulative bugfixes - charging crossbowmen included now - that have been done during the interim. Delaying another month will allow us to wrap up this bugfixing nicely. The crossbowmen bug in particular is one that is in 'flux:' we're fixing instances of it as they are reported to us.

And what of Welkwood Bog and Tales of the Wild Coast?

Neither will be featured in 5.7.

What about the Reactive Temple mod?

It also will not be featured in 5.7.

    What the hell?

Sorry, but none of these mods are done yet. It's as simple as that.

What's the status on all of them?

Welkwood Bog has progressed not at all, and very likely won't progress at all anytime soon, if ever.

Tales of the Wild Coast has progressed not at all. We're still mulling over exactly what to do with TotWC. Possibilities include just putting the existing versions of the expansions in place where the 'high level' TotWC was supposed to be, and (maybe) still doing it as was planned originally. One thing that will not happen is the expansions will not go back to where they were pre- 5.6.

Reactive Temple is coming along nicely but there is a lot of work yet to be done.

Is Co8 5.8.0 still scheduled for release in April of 2010?

    Yes.

Will it feature all these mods?

My guess is that there's a good chance that Reactive Temple will be in it, a decent chance that TotWC lite will be in it, and very little chance that anything having to do with Welkwood Bog will be in it.

So ... feel free to start new games with 5.6.1 if you were waiting for 5.6.2, or just wait for another month for 5.7 if you've got something else to do. Late December's not that far off. :)

Circle of Eight Modpack 5.7.0 BETA Released!

The latest modpack from the Circle of Eight fixes bugs and addresses important gameplay issues.

    Dateline December 27, 2009, USA

The Circle of Eight is pleased to present the latest version of our modpack for The Temple of Elemental Evil - Circle of Eight Modpack 5.7.0 BETA.

Circle of Eight Modpack 5.7.0 BETA fixes a variety of bugs reported in 5.6.0, such as the masterwork inventory respawn bugs, the shopmap crash bug, and the charging crossbowmen bug. 5.7.0 also adds some new wizard robe and mystic garb designs and colors, as well as a variety of new colors of wizard hats.

Perhaps more importantly, Co8 5.7.0 BETA addresses the gameplay issues of balance and NPC interaction. The experience point percentage modifier has been reduced so as to slow level progression, as progression had been proceeding at a more rapid rate due to Co8's earlier NPC/monster stats overhaul that brought everything closer to the D&D ruleset. And many NPCs will now behave more intelligently when it comes to managing their gear. In very simple terms, they will refuse to turn over starting equipment that has some gameplay significance, such as magical arms and armor, but they will not trifle over meaningless items and they will not horde loot and overburden themselves. Note that because of this, the Humble NPCs setting (which allows player control of NPC inventories) is now automatically activated, and this setting cannot be altered.

Circle of Eight Modpack 5.7.1 BETA and the 5.7.1 Hotfix add-on

    Updates for Co8 v5.7.0 BETA

    Dateline January 2, 2010, USA

The Circle of Eight has released a followup modpack to v5.7.0 BETA - Circle of Eight Modpack 5.7.1 BETA.

This release is accessible in two forms, a complete new modpack - Circle of Eight Modpack 5.7.1 BETA, and a patch - the 5.7.1 Hotfix add-on.

    What do they contain?

    Both packages contain:

    • The Burne null dialog fix
    • The Bing healed dialog fix
    • The GWS/F bugfix reversion
    • A fix for portraits - 5.7.0 mistakenly included the portraits from the upcoming BG portrait pack.

    Which should I use?

Use Circle of Eight Modpack 5.7.1 BETA if:

    • You have not yet downloaded and/or started playing the 5.7.0 BETA.
    • You have downloaded and/or started playing the 5.7.0 BETA but you don't mind downloading another complete modpack and you don't mind starting a new game.
Use the 5.7.1 Hotfix add-on if:

    • You have already downloaded and are playing the 5.7.0 BETA and don't want to start a new game.
      • Note that if you're already playing 5.7.0 BETA and have selected BG portraits for any of your PCs, this patch will fubar them.
      • Also note that this hotfix won't fix Burne's voice audio problems.
For a full list of changes, please see the included release notes.

Circle of Eight Modpack 5.7.1 BETA is an entirely separate module from 5.7.0 and will need to be activated accordingly in TFE-X. You will not be able to use saved games from 5.7.0 with this module. You will have to start a new game.

You can download the 5.7.1 Hotfix .rar here:

    Co8 5.7.1 Hotfix

Extract the contents of the .rar archive to your ToEE root directory. The Co8 5.7.1 Hotfix will need to be applied in TFE-X by clicking 'Add-On Packs' while Co8 5.7.0 is the active module and selecting 'Circle of Eight Modpack 5.7.1 BETA' from the list.
