Anyone out there (read: Ted) care to take on a new and hopefully easy sound assignment?

Some time back, the 2nd level wizard/sorcerer spell Scorching Ray was implimented. Not being an original ToEE spell, it was coded in (by moebius I believe) and graphics from the cleric spell Searing Light were used, with the color changed.

There was never a sound assigned to the new spell. Whenever you cast it in-game now, it is eerily silent. Now, I appreciate eeriness and all as much as the next guy, but I do believe the eery factor was unintentional, as I don't think moebius much cared about sound. This seems to be a widespread feeling . . . I wonder why?

Well, it would be great, I think, if Scorching Ray could at last become eerily soundful as opposed to eerily silent. I would think that the sound for Searing Light would apply to the spell just as well as it's graphics did.

    Any takers? Ted?

Ok i haven't been able to fix this but i will tell u what i have learnt so someone else can have a go if they think of anything.

The spell sounds are in ToEE2\sound\Spells. Up one level and we find the control file snd_spells.mes. Here's the rub; inside it says:

Now the spell number form Scorching Ray is 733, so the equation gives us a base number of 20660 (thats like a line number we start adding the locations of the files we want for the different sound files, spell starting, spell expiring, spell missing etc). 20660 is of course beyond the 19999 limit.

BUT the controller (index) for the snd files in general (spells, items, critters etc) says,
So perhaps you can put things past 19999. Certainly the bardic music is there. But when I put a couple sounds files in the ToEE2\sound\Spells and pointed the snd_spell.mes at them, nothing happened. (I put them in lines 20664 and 20665, the lines for projectile sounds).

Well, i will keep trying, but unless i find something new I can't see why this wouldn't work. :yeaaa:

Hey Ted, pretty interesting sound from the other thread there . . .

Maybe we should use an existing spell sound effect though? Searing Light, from which Scorching Ray was taken, would likely be problem-free.

Ok well thats one vote to change it :anger:

Mind u I am not that happy with it, the sound is a little long (though if u r casting from a distance it works, but for a normal combat i tihnk it is a bit long), as I said i am happy to change it.

Searing light eh? Sounds like a plan... I'll poke the other board for some more feedback. Its meant to be something for everyone so constructive criticism is most welcome :)
