I am new to D&D so bear with me.

I just leveled up my Wizard and am trying to decide which 2 level 1 spells to learn.

    Ray of Enfeeblement
    - 1d6+1 per two levels of "Strength Damage"....
Does Strength Damage mean the Strength Modifier?

    Mage Armor- "+4 armor bonus"....
What exactly is armor bonus? Is that AC?

Charm Person - How often will this spell work?

    Thanks.

Actually Ray of enfeeblement temporarilly damages the target's strength score, which differs slightly from the modifier - a score of 10 or 11 has 0 modifier, 12 or 13 has +1, 14 or 15 has +2 etc, so the strength modifier would be reduced by half of the result on the 1d6+1 per 2 levels of ability point damage roll.

AC is worked out by a number of factors...

    10 (base value)
Size (+0 for medium, +1 for small characters)
Dexterity modifier (Dex score - 10 and divided by 2)
Armour Bonus (bonus given by armour)
    Shield Bonus (yada yada yada)
Deflection Bonus (given by certain spells)
Dodge Bonus (given by certain feats)
Cover Bonus (If your behind cover - including other characters)
Circumstance Bonus (in certain circumstances - such as being tripped)
And probably a bunch of other stuff I've forgotten.

Spell focus Enchantment, and greater spell focus enchant ment, as well as a good primary ability score (Intelligence for wizards, Charisma for Bards and Sorcerers, and Wisdom for the other spell casting classes) will help improve your chances with this spell.

And keep in mind that a wizard can "Copy Scroll" when he/she finds scrolls of spells he/she doesn't already know, once those scrolls are identified by read magic.

One last point: there are so many bonus types because generally speaking, they don't stack. So lets say your wizard takes medium armour proficiency, casts mage armour, then straps on his medium armour. He won't get an AC of 'medium armour +4 from mage armour spell', he'll just get one or the other. Ditto he can't double up mage armour with bracers of armour.

Allyx forgot natural armour bonuses (achievable with, say, amulets of natural armour or a Barkskin spell). :Being_a_s :nerd:

Ray of Enfeeblement and Charm are both good spells to select. Web and Magic Missile are also equally good spells to select. Typically, your wizard will be in the rear ranks and should not be smitten with weapons...except for against those marvelous orcs we all love and adore to fight so much. ;)

How do you choose to "Copy Scroll" with a wizard?

"Copy"? I found an option to create scrolls. I created a bunch of Magic missile schools at the cost of 1xp and some gold.

Though I haven't found any scrolls of magic that I don't know, so maybe that option will appear once I do find one.

    Thanks for the help everyone.

If you have scrolls, and there are many, the the option to copy scrolls will be on the radial menu. Use it to copy spells to the spellbook for the ones you want.

Note also that this ability is class specific to Wizards only, and only works on Arcane spells (you can't get a cleric or druid to scribe a bulls strength scroll and have the wizard learn it - but you could get a Sorcerer or Bard to scribe some scrolls for the wixard, as long as the spell is one that would normally apear in the Wizard's spell list as well.)

Keep your ears open in Hommlet in case anyone mentions wizards... you might want to meet them and have a little chat. ;)

Yes, oh yah and BTW, the Welcome Wench Inn is a good place to grab a drink and quench a thirst. And, depending on the time of day, there can be several people at that establishment who are talkative people.

There are a LOT of scrolls of all types in the game. Just keep on looting and you'll find them.
