What does shield proficiency do? I gave the biggest shield I could find to my wizard and he can use it, gets AC bonus without any penalties I can see (except for spell failure). I am using Co8 4.0 on top of Atari patch 2. Thanks
Edit: In Help it says that I am supposed to take a penalty equal to shields AC bonus on among others attack rolls but I am not (checked im combat messages window)
Edit 2: My bad: I was using the Wooden Elvish Shield and got no penalties - with other shields penalties came back (but still- extra 2 to AC-great for spellcasters...)
Isuppose I closed my own thread now...

Yeah, it's the armor check penalty that gets applied to your to-hit roll. Since the elvish shield has no check penalty (and I think no spell failure too, but I'm not sure), it's a freebie for wizards. Anyway, it's also a nice option for pure rogues, who normally can't use shields, though I usually add at least one fighter or barbarian level in there myself.
